فهَلso is there? لكَfor you فيin سَلوةٍconsolation مَطمَعُhope
فهَل لكَ في سَلوةٍ مَطمَعُ
It is love that does what it does.
Love makes what it makes

تجودُ عليكَ ولا تمنَعُ
And no eye he stirred to longing has been stingy;
No flinty-eyed one denied him her bounty
it gives freely to you and withholds nothing.
She gives freely, does not refuse

and you are entrusted with that.
And you were the repository for that

Reproach for them, while you have none
and reproach for you, with no listening ear,
Blame on you, while you hear none

And many a man whose gaze delights in slumber—
One who delights in disasters, his eye
I was mistaken about him today: one taking delight.
I wrongly called him ‘delighted’ today

And if a king before him sought her,
And if a king desired her before him
she hastened to his heart to intercede for me.

Lovers persist in disparaging her,
They attack her good name
and I am enamored of loving love.
Yet I am infatuated with love

I gave the rhymes repose in her praise
I have set the rhymes to praising her
when Yushaʿ spent the night adoring her.
For Yusha`u fell in love with her

It is Time, and these are its vicissitudes,
It is fate and its vagaries
and none but you can ward them off.
And none other than you can drive it back

I saw you full of passion for high honor,
I saw you passionate for the lofty
though less than what you have attained would suffice.
While content with what you could not obtain

How long will you be blamed and not accept
And how long will you be chided, yet not listen?
And continuously roasted but not listen?

Is not the glory dispersed among men
of glory, all gathered together in you?
Collected in full with you?
