Is this my soul's talk, or nighttime conversation?

    Or some whispering of thoughts?

    Or the anxious ones' misgivings?

Then where are you, Abu Umar?

Far from it! No, by God, neither

the witness of the eyes nor the report has lied.

And I have indeed seen the assemblies of the

leaders as the forecourts of grave-pits.

And I marveled when they grew distraught, though

those who endured had drawn their fortitude from them.

And they are mountains against calamities

when time persists in bringing them.

    Their souls bore the grief

for them and for other folk.

Before you, no calamity had passed

without their leaving a mark upon it.

But it is the bond that lies

    between death and humankind.

No good comes to an end—good

it was; or evil, and so evil.

God's is your grave—what it held!

And His is your bier—what it took captive!

And I had indeed intended to

say: 'May you, O grave, be watered with rain!'

And I saw beneath your soil what

would be prayed for on your behalf, were it to appear.
