If his soul has despaired, and if he has lost hope,
If his soul despairs, and if he becomes hopeless,
and he has delighted in withdrawal and found contentment,
And is pleased to withdraw into seclusion,

That is because the generous people have turned away
from their generosity, deeming it a mistake,
From their generosity, thinking it a mistake,

Has become, to the one who intends it, dangerous and hazardous.

He rose high when his character came near,

How can one who hopes for bounty distinguish it
How can the radiance of his hopes shine through
from death, after the two have mingled?
The gloom, now that the two have intermingled?

It is as if Time, when it appointed him,
required generosity of him and made it a condition.
Singled him out for generosity and stipulated conditions.
