How long will he keep shooting, and how often take deliberate aim?
How long will he throw, and how much does he intend
May his hands be fettered, for my burning thirst does not cool.
His hands were tied, so my hands cannot cool
طرفٌa gaze تطرَّفassailed the edge of مُهجتيmy heart فرصدتُهso I lay in wait for it

A gaze assailed my heart's edge, so I lay in wait for it.
An eyelid glanced at my heart so I watched him
So it passed and returned—and how often you see me keeping watch!
He left and returned, how much do I keep watch

Until it pierced deep, once it reached my heart.
Until he penetrated when he realized my heart
So today its black pupil is a black serpent to my heart.
Today I make him black to my black heart

When he appeared and saw my streaming tears,
When he appeared and saw my tears flowing
He turned away professing the Trinity, and I turned back professing God's oneness.
He turned aside multiplying while I bowed in oneness
ياO ربِّmy Lord كيفَhow نصرتَهYou aided him وأناwhile I الذيthe one who
إياكَYou منfrom بينِamong الثلاثةthe three أعبُدُI worship
O my Lord, how have You aided him, when I am the one
O Lord how did you help him yet I am the one
Who worships You alone out of the three?
Among the three that worships you

And I turned away from him for what You know; yet
And I turned away from him when I knew, yet
That turning away, as You know, is forced.
That rejection as you know is intended

And a gaze shares my sickness: its arrow,
And my involvement in the illness is a glance of his arrow
Not its judgment in what it did, is well aimed.
Not his opinion in what came to him is aimed

It shoots and kills outright, while calamities surround it,
He throws so he hits me, and the events around him
And their story is ascribed to the nights.
And their talk is supported to the nights

Ahmad
And I have sought your support against their misfortunes,
And I relied on you from his tribulations
O Ahmad son of Muhammad, O Ahmad!
O Ahmad son of Mohammed, O Ahmad

Today you spread your palms to bring me relief
Today you extend your palm to comfort me
From their vicissitudes; you stand, while I sit.
To divert it, and you stand while I sit

And for these you were called—and how often called for their like!
And for it you were called and how much were you called for the like
So your bounty flowed where a promise stumbles,
So your help flowed to the extent that the appointment kneels

With virtues like water in its clarity;
With manners like water in its purity
Nay, to the thirsty they are gentler and cooler.
But they for the one seeking help are more gentle and cooler

And resolves like fire, except that
And with determination like fire except that
Misfortunes are cast upon them, and they are kindled.
The misfortunes are thrown on it and it is ignited

And when fate unsheathes some of its swords,
And when the two youths put on some of his swords
Then Abu al-Husayn is girded with a sword to match.
So Abu Al Hussein is wearing the like
ياO منyou who يظنُّdeems الجودَgenerosity حتماًbinding واجباًobligatory

إنّيindeed I أظنُّthink بأنَّthat ظنَّكyour belief يَفسُدُis unsound
O you who deem generosity a binding duty,
O you who thinks generosity is definitely a duty
Indeed, I think your belief is unsound,
I think your assumption is wrong

Since you are praised for bestowing bounty,
As long as you are praised for giving comfort
When one who performs a duty receives no praise.
If the doer of duty is not praised
