Has the night come to stay,

    or has dawn appeared pitch-dark?

If only I knew—was it in particular

that I said this, or in general?

    Or have tears in eyelids

    pictured stars within them?

And she who departed, then slept,

confident she would lull no one to sleep,

    left in every body

a grievous affliction of wasting sickness.

My heart wandered in love, but illness refused

    to let my body wander.

So we came to count as unharmed

one who spent the night snakebitten.
