أكرَهُ عَدلَ الكأسِ في المَجلسِ
Had the cup of love been just, I would not
If the cup of passion were made just, I would not
resent the cup’s fairness in the gathering.
Dislike the justice of the cup in the drinking bout.

The companion of souls is not the one
The mixture of souls is not what
that rules unjustly over souls.
Rules unjustly over souls.

So turn toward the one rescued from his reason
So make just, oh chief of the army,
by it, O Abu al-Jaysh—toward the bankrupt.
To the saver of his reason from it, to the bankrupt.
