ماnot كلَّفَtasked اللَّهُGod لكَfor you الخَيلاthe horses
أَنto تَحملَcarry البَحرَthe sea ولاnor اللَّيلاthe night
God has not charged horses, for your sake,
God did not task you, O horse, with carrying the sea or the night,
With carrying the sea or the night.
Nor did we see, before you, a horse on which trailed a tail.
وَلاnor رَأَيناwe saw فَرَساًa horse قَبلَهُbefore it
أرخَتlet down عَليهِover it مُزنةٌa raincloud ذَيلاa trailing hem
Nor have we seen a horse before it
You took the place of the wind in carrying burdens -
Over which a raincloud let down its train.
Expending your strength and wits.
قامَstood مَقامَin the place of الرِّيحِthe wind فيin حَملِهاcarrying it
فاستفرَغَso it exhausted القوّةَthe strength والحيلاand stratagems
It took the wind's place in carrying the cloud,
Your known quality in color resembles the Nile,
So it expended all its strength and ingenuity.
And it fancied to resemble it in flooding.
أشبهَresembled مَعروفَكَyour bounty فيin لَونِهits color
وَهمَّand aspired أَنto يُشبِهَهُresemble it نَيلاin giving
It resembled your bounty in its color,
The land was thirsty, so in its eagerness,
And aspired to match it in giving.
It cast upon it rain and torrent.
واستَسقَتand asked for rain الأَرضُthe earth فَمِنso from حِرصِهits eagerness
ألقَىit cast عَلَيهاupon her الغَيثَthe rain والسَّيلاand the flood
And the earth asked for rain; so, in its eagerness,
It cast rain and flood upon her.
