For the like of this the days had been waiting.

So no calamity after it has any weight.

And Death has satisfied its desire through us—will

our wish for relief from grief’s torments be fulfilled?

O house of noble deeds, your ruin has left within us

a house of cares, whose inhabitants are thoughts.

O day of his death, surely the days of sorrow were created

after your passing; no span of life remains to them.

O son of the Prophet, in a calamity’s assault

upon you all lies a lesson for all people.

Such are death’s decrees: whenever a life is known

for its clarity, murk from that very clarity mingles with it.

How many a company never reached evening, when death took them in the morning,

and others it took at evening, so they never set out at dawn.

O Abu Muhammad, have noble patience, for no

tree is alarmed when a branch of its own withers.

The loss of the bright stars, should they set, matters little

to one pressing on by night, so long as the moon shines.
