    جَعلنَ لكلِّ فؤادٍ فتُونا

    Eyes denied other eyes their sleep;

they brought enchantment to every heart.

Thus they were the desire of all humankind,

and death to whoever sought them.

And a heart that events toss about,

as they please, to left and right,

    guards its passion from everyone,

yet its tears bring low what it guards.

So why should I conceal love's sickness,

when what I feared would happen has happened?

Love began in me as frivolity,

but once it took hold, it became madness.

And I used to think love easy,

but I met with humiliating torment from it.

Had you witnessed the day of farewell,

you would have seen eyelids whispering to eyelids.

Has parting left anyone in whom I can place hope,

among the first or the last,

except love for the family of the Prophet of guidance?

For love of them is the hope of those who hope.

They are my provision for death; they are

my salvation; they are triumph for those who triumph.

They are the approach to the Pool for those who come to drink,

and they are God's handhold for those who trust.

    فكن بمحبَّتهم مُستَعِينا

    They are the aid of whoever seeks righteous deeds;

so seek aid through loving them.

They are God's proof on His earth,

even if the deniers reject the proof.

They are the speakers; they are the truthful,

and you, by denying them, are liars.

    فَما بالُكم لهمُ وارِثونا

    They are the heirs to the Messenger's knowledge;

so how is it that you are their heirs?

You harbored against them grudges from the past,

though by their swords you are Muslims.

You disavowed allegiance to your master,

though on the day of al-Ghadir you believed in it.

And you, of what the Chosen One said

and what he expressly stated of his merit, are aware.

And you said, 'We consent to what you said,'

while your souls said, 'We do not consent.'

Which of you, then, had greater right to it,

and was firmer in authority than the pure ones?

And which of you was, after the Prophet,

an appointed successor, and who among you was trustworthy?

And which of you slept in his bed

while you were seeking his lifeblood?

And who shared a bird with the Pure One,

while you bore witness for him to that?

May God curse a people who saw your right guidance

plainly, yet strayed into manifest error.
