فَلماذا كلُّ نِصفٍ

يدَّعِي مَنزِلَتَينِ

يدَّعِي مَنزِلَتَينِ

so why does every half

So why do all these people

claim two stations?

Claim to have two places?

تِه عَلى النَّاسِ بخَلقٍ

تِه عَلى النَّاسِ بخَلقٍ

وبِخُلقٍ مُضحِكينِ

وبِخُلقٍ مُضحِكينِ

Be haughty toward people for your looks

They impose themselves on others

and your character—both laughable.

With a jesting manner

فلِهذا التّيهِ ألهُو

فلِهذا التّيهِ ألهُو

بكَ يا سُخنَةَ عينِ

بكَ يا سُخنَةَ عينِ

For this arrogance I make sport

It's because of this confusion

of you, O torment to the eye!

That I weep, oh beloved
