Convey a message to Prince Abu al-Jaysh:
Convey to the commander of the army, sir, a message
solitude has driven me to send it.
Solitude overwhelmed me into sending it
ياO ذاyou الَّذيwho يَقِفُstand العُفاةُseekers of bounty بِبابِهِat his door
فتَظَلُّso they remain واقِفَةًstanding عَلىupon آمالِهاtheir hopes
O you at whose door seekers of bounty stand,
O you, at whose door the destitute stand
and remain standing upon their hopes;
Remaining expectantly hopeful
فإِذاthen when أَتَتهُthey come to him تَصَرَّفَتthey act freely فيwith مالِهhis wealth
فكأنَّهُso it is as though he مُتَصَرِّفٌacting freely فيwith مالِهاtheir wealth
when they come to him, they dispose freely of his wealth,
When she comes to him, she disposes of his money
as though he were disposing of theirs—
As if he were disposing of her money
مِنfrom فَرطِthe abundance of ماwhat عايَنتُهُI witnessed it مِنof بِشرِهhis joy
بِقُدومِهاat their arrival ورَأيتُand I saw منof إدلالِهاtheir confident familiarity
because of the great joy I witnessed in him
Due to the excessive joy I saw in his face
at their arrival, and the confident familiarity I saw in them.
At her arrival, and how he pampered her
ماwhat لِلمَعاليwith lofty honors أصبَحَتhave become مَشغولَةpreoccupied
عنِّيaway from me وكنتُand I used to أعدُّbe counted منamong أشغالِهاtheir concerns
Why have lofty honors become distracted
The dignities have become busy with other things
from me, when I used to be counted among their concerns?
And neglected me, though I counted myself among their occupations
