    كلٌّ يَرى أن لا يُسالِم

    Between my eyelids lie fierce battles;

each thinks it should make no peace.

And it is as though the torrent of tears dragged

sleep away when it overflowed, streaming.

And you count yourself a lover,

and spend the night dreaming of the beloved.

The phantom is surely more in love than you, for

it travels to you by night while you sleep.

And a fair, radiant face never ceases

    to gleam beneath coal-black hair,

    until it beckons me toward

a fierce blaze, its sides aflame:

a house that love built, with no

    destroyer—not even forgetfulness.

How often cheeks have kindled it by day,

and smiling mouths have cooled it by night!

So the two are like time’s vicissitudes

toward me, and the generosity of Abu al-Ghana'im.

    If Zayd al-Khayl has

departed, then Zayd al-Jud is coming.

    Honorifics circulate: Abu al-Ghana'im—

his hand is the mother of spoils.

And a downturned pen upon the parchment,

    known for toppling turbans,

and raising them, that it may be in

    prosperity and adversity a ruler.

Pearls were scattered upon it by

your peerless mind; it became their stringer.

And indeed, today I marvelled at

the generous deeds within your hands,

when it began to tell of love

in what it revealed, while you kept it hidden.

Do not reject me for being unadorned,

    destitute, without the days’ finery.

And do you not see, among all that is seen,

    the full moon without amulets?
