And people did not acknowledge what I was specially endowed with,

apart from them, just as they were endowed apart from me.

They saw their stations, through wealth, begin

to rise, while my station, through poverty, brought me low.

And they were certain that what their hands had closed

around was better for worldly life and for religion.

They held it fast, barred access to it, and refused

to let it go, in hardship or in ease.

So when they were miserly with what perishes, I was miserly with what

endures, for the people's miserliness has come to infect me.

Except for a remnant of generosity—whoever comes upon it

is at once freed from needing generosity for a time.

I am among its seekers, the one pursued by my times

deliberately; and among its possessors is Musa ibn Harun.
