وقَتيلِ الجُفونِ سُقماً تَفانَت

وقَتيلِ الجُفونِ سُقماً تَفانَت

في هَواهُ النُّفوسُ أَسراً وقَتلا

في هَواهُ النُّفوسُ أَسراً وقَتلا

And one whose eyelids languor has slain—souls have perished

The slain of eyelids are sick with love

In love of him, captive and slain.

In his passion souls are captive and slain

ما سَقاني كأساً أمرَّ من العَل

ما سَقاني كأساً أمرَّ من العَل

قَمِ إِلا كانَت من الشَّهدِ أَحلَى

قَمِ إِلا كانَت من الشَّهدِ أَحلَى

He never gave me a cup more bitter than colo-

He gave me no bitter cup that I drank

cynth without its being sweeter than honey.

But it was sweeter than honey

صِفهُ كيفَ استَوى لك الوَصف فيه

صِفهُ كيفَ استَوى لك الوَصف فيه

فابنُ عَبد الأَعلى من الوَصفِ أَعلى

فابنُ عَبد الأَعلى من الوَصفِ أَعلى

Describe him however you can describe him;

Describe him, how apt is your description!

For Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā is higher than description.

The son of 'Abd al-A'la is higher than description
