وقد جاءَ القلندسُ بعد فطرٍ

وأيامي بذاكَ وذا حَيارى

And indeed the Kalends came after Eid al-Fitr,

The savant came after Eid

and my days are bewildered by that and this;

And my days in bewilderment between this and that

رأَتني لا أعدهما احتِفالاً

رأَتني لا أعدهما احتِفالاً

فلا في المسلمينَ ولا النَّصارى

فلا في المسلمينَ ولا النَّصارى

they saw me count neither as a celebration,

She saw me not celebrating either

so I am neither among the Muslims nor the Christians.

Not among the Muslims, nor among the Christians
