A full moon, bent by a sand mound and a supple bough;
The full moon, bent by the howdah and its saddlecloth
My excuse is set forth in his cheek-down.
My excuse for his blemish being outspread
أيُّwhat a دُرٍّpearl للثَّقبِfor piercing أيُّwhat a كتابٍbook
لَوif تَأتَّتwere possible بِصَفحَتَيهِupon its two pages الخُطُوطُthe lines of writing
What a pearl for piercing! What a book,
What good are lessons to the unheeding mind
if lines of writing could be traced upon its two pages!
Were the pages to reveal their lines?
وإِذاand when اغتَرَّhe is off guard قُلتُI say ظَبيٌa gazelle غَريرٌunwary
وإِذاand when افتَرَّhe smiles قلتُI say دُرٌّpearls سقِيطُscattered
And when he is off his guard, I say: “An unwary gazelle”;
When he raved, I called it but transient madness
And when he smiles, I say: “Scattered pearls.”
When he erred, said only a pearl had slipped.
