Why do I part each day from a companion
Why must I part from a companion each day,
at whose loss death's vicissitudes have split solid rock?
Whom the strokes of fate have cracked?
وأَرىand I see أحبَّائيmy loved ones تَفَرَّقhas dispersed جمعُهمtheir company
وتشتَّتواand they scattered بيدby the hand of الرَّدىdeath أشتاتاasunder
And I see my loved ones, their company dispersed,
I see my loved ones scattered,
and scattered asunder by the hand of death.
Tossed by the hands of loss far and wide.
وخَلَتْand became empty ديارthe dwellings الأَكرمينthe most generous وأصبَحَتْand became

And the dwellings of the most generous lie empty, and
The abodes of the noble are empty,
within them the bones of the noblest have become crumbled remains.
In them only bones of the eminent lie.
ودعاand summoned التُّقىpiety ناعٍa death-crier يخفّضlowers نعيَهhis death announcement
منَّاamong us الرُّؤوسthe heads ويرفعand raises الأَصواتاthe voices
And a death-crier summoned piety; his tidings bow
The pious bid farewell in hushed tones,
our heads and raise our voices.
Bows lowered, voices raised.
ولقدand indeed أصمَّhas deafened مسامعيmy ears بعدكyour absence والتقىand piety
وانبَتَّand was severed حبلُthe cord الآملينof the hopeful بتاتاutterly
And indeed, your absence and piety's have deafened my ears,
After you, my ears are deaf even to duty,
and the cord of the hopeful has been utterly severed.
And the rope of hope is severed.
ياO أَطْيَبَthe finest القومthe people الَّذينwhom ألِفْتُهمI grew familiar with them
فيamong الناجبينthe noble خلائقاًcharacters وذواتاand persons
O finest of the people I have known,
O kindest of people, whom I knew
among the noble in character and in person.
Noble in nature and deeds.
لوif كنتُI was أُدرِكُI recover بالأَسىthrough sorrow ماwhat فاتنيescaped me
قدindeed كنتُI was أُدرِكُI recover بالأَسىthrough sorrow ماwhat فاتاwas lost
If I could recover through sorrow what I have lost,
Had I known regret for what is past
I would surely recover through sorrow what is gone.
I'd have regretted what went by.
ولقَدand indeed سئِمْتُI grew weary منof الحياةlife ومَلَّنيand grew weary of me
طولُlength الثواءthe sojourn فلاso not أُريدI desire حياتاlife
And I have indeed wearied of life, and weary of me
I'm tired of life and weary,
is the long sojourn; I desire life no more,
Prolonged exile I no longer desire.
منfrom بعدafter ماthat زالdeparted الأَمينal-Amin وأنَّهand indeed he
كانَhe was الجبالthe mountains الرَّاسياتfirmly rooted ثباتاin steadfastness
after al-Amin departed—and he
Since the trusted one is gone, he
was, in steadfastness, the firmly rooted mountains.
Who made mountains seem firmly rooted.
وفَقَدْتُand I lost منهfrom him فرائداًrare gems وفوائداًand benefits
ومكارماًand noble deeds ومغانماًand gains وهباتاand gifts
And in him I lost rare gems and benefits,
I've lost through him gems and gains,
and noble deeds, gains, and gifts.
Bounties, spoils and gifts.
ونظرتُand I looked فيamong الأَحياءthe living نظرةَa gaze عارفٍa discerning person
منfrom بعدهafter him فوَجَدْتُهاso I found them أمواتاdead
And I looked upon the living with a discerning gaze,
I looked upon the living with a knower's eye
after his passing, and found them dead.
After him, and found them dead.
