To Sha'ban, my lord, for whom I would give my life,
To my beloved master, the redeemer
the spring of generosity and the verdant garden;
The spring of virtue and the blossoming meadow
إلىto منhim who لمnot تزلcease أيديهhis favors فيناamong us
كأمثالِlike the likenesses of القلائدِnecklaces فيupon النحورnecks
to him whose favors among us have always been
To the one whose hands have always been with us
like necklaces upon our necks.
Like necklaces around our necks

Longing turns me toward him, then turns me back,
Love makes me waver and bend
for reasons that come to mind.
For reasons that pass dangerously
وقدand indeed سألasked الأميرُthe emir الأمسِyesterday عنّيafter me

And yesterday the emir asked after me,
The prince asked about me yesterday
and why I stayed behind instead of setting out.
And why I'm not going on the journey

إذاwhen سألasks الكبيرُthe great man عنafter الصغيرthe humble man
And it is a mark of noble character and virtue
It is customary for great men
when the great man asks after the humble.
To ask after their juniors

And they said, “Why do you not go to him
And they said, "Why don't you go to him
and return with joy and delight?”
So you may return happy and rewarded?"

But I did not reveal to them the true nature of my plight,
But I did not reveal to them the essence of my matter
nor tell them what was in my heart.
Or make known what was in my conscience

My ceasing to visit him was not by choice,
It was not my intention to avoid visiting him
nor was my absence due to any failing of mine.
Nor was my absence from his palace intentional

Nor have I done without him—no, by your father—
No, by your father, I cannot do without him
any more than the thirsty can do without pure water.
Like a thirsty man cannot do without cold water

Without his sanctuary I have no blossoming
nor depart from any water-source but his.
Without his spring I have no streams

My day with him is a flash of lightning,
My days with him are flashes of lightning
and my night after leaving him is a blind man's night.
My nights without him are nights of the blind

يعوقُhinders العبدَthe servant عنfrom بابthe door of الأميرthe emir
A chamberlain's harshness and ill fortune
The sternness of an unsmiling doorman
bar this servant from the emir's door.
Prevents the slave from entering his master's door
وجَدْتُand I found ببابهat his door البوَّابَthe doorkeeper يعدوcharging

At his door I found the doorkeeper charging
I found the doorman at his door charging
at me more fiercely than a vicious dog.
Fiercer than a vicious dog

And the dog began barking insults at me,
The dog kept barking insults at me
and kept on barking and growling.
Increasing his barking and howling

nor am I one to bandy words with the wicked.
For I do not respond to evil

So have you ever seen a dog standing guard
Have you ever seen a dog protecting
to protect the ferocious lion?
The ferocious lion in the jungle?

To whom shall I complain of being barred, and who will help me?
Whom shall I complain to about the barrier?
And to whom shall I offer my excuse, and who will excuse me?
Who will help me and accept my excuse?
