زارَتْshe visited وجنحُwhile the wing of الدجىnight's darkness ياO سَعْدُSa'd معتكرٌthick with darkness
فأوْقَدَتْso she kindled فيin ظلامthe darkness of اللَّيلnight مصباحاa lamp
She came to visit, O Sa'd, while night's wing was thick with darkness;
The night's wings visited, O Saad, in turmoil,
So she kindled a lamp in the darkness of night.
So it lit a lamp in the darkness of night.
وقالand said صَحْبيَmy companions ممَّاbecause of what راحkept يدهِشُهُمْastonishing them
أصْبَحْتَyou have become فيin هذهthis الظلماءpitch darkness إصباحاdaybreak
And my companions said, amazed at what kept dazzling them:
My friends said, wondering,
“You have become daybreak in this darkness!”
"You have become morning in this gloom."
وقلتُand I said والروحwhile the soul تستشفيseeks healing بطيبin the sweetness of شذاa scent
منfrom عَرْفِهاher perfume وعَرَفْتُand I found القلبthe heart مرتاحاat ease
And I said, as my soul sought healing in the sweet scent
And I said, while my soul reveled in the fragrance
Of her perfume, and I found my heart at ease:
Of her scent, and my heart found peace:
أحياrevived أريجُكyour fragrance مَيتاًa dead man لاno حراكmovement لهin him
فهلْso, have...? بَعَثْتَyou sent forth معwith الأرواحthe fragrant breezes أرواحاsouls
“Your fragrance brought a motionless dead man to life;
"Your aroma brings to life one dead, motionless -
So have you sent souls forth along with the fragrant breezes?”
Did you revive spirits along with the souls?"
وعلَّلَتْناand she soothed us وتَعْليلُand the soothing of المشوقthe yearning lover بماwith what
يَشفيheals فؤاداًa heart شَديدintense in الشّوقlonging مُلتاحاparched
And she soothed us; the yearning lover's solace lies in what
She justified us - and the lover's justification
Heals a heart parched with fierce longing.
With what heals a heart intensely longing, appeased.
وأسكَرَتْناand she intoxicated us بألفاظٍwith words تكرّرهاshe repeats them
وماand not أدارَتْshe passed around علىamong النّدمانthe drinking companions أقداحاcups
And she intoxicated us with words she kept repeating,
She intoxicated us with words she repeats,
Yet passed no cups among the drinking companions.
Though she did not pass the wine-cups around.
وبتُّand I spent the night أشْرَبُI drink منfrom معسولhoney-sweet ريقتهاher saliva
راحاًwine وأشرَبُand I drink منfrom ألفاظهاher words راحاwine
And I spent the night drinking from her honeyed saliva
I stay up drinking the wine of her saliva,
Wine, and drinking wine from her words.
Finding comfort in her words and sayings.
وأقطفُand I pluck الغَضَّthe tender fruit منfrom تفّاحthe apples of وجنتهاher cheek
ومَنand who رأىhas seen قاطِفاًa plucker باللّثمwith kisses تفاحاapples
And plucking tender fruit from the apples of her cheek;
I pluck the unripe fruit of her apple-cheek,
And who has seen someone plucking apples with kisses?
Has anyone seen a plucker kiss a cheek?
حتَّىuntil إذاwhen الفجرdawn لاحتappeared ليto me ملابسُهits garments
مُبْيَضَّةًwhitened ورداءُwhile the mantle of اللَّيلnight قدalready طاحاhad fallen
Until, when dawn's garments appeared to me,
Until the dawn shone upon me in its raiment -
White, while night's mantle had fallen away,
Whitened, and night's cloak had fallen.
وأوْضحَand made clear الأمرthe matter فيin لآلاءthe radiance of غُرَّتهِits bright brow
وزادَهand increased it فَلَقُthe breaking of الإصباحdawn إيضاحاin clarity
And it made the matter plain in the radiance of its brow,
The matter became clear in the radiance of her charms,
And the breaking of dawn made it clearer still,
And the dawn's split increased its elucidation.
وَدَّعْتهاI bade her farewell وكأنَّand as though القلبthe heart حينئذat that moment
غَداbecame علىin إثرهاher wake ياO سعدُSa'd أرواحاsouls
I bade her farewell, and it was as though my heart then
I bade her farewell, as if my heart then
Had become, O Sa'd, souls following in her wake.
Became, O Saad, a spirit trailing hers.
وأعْقَبَتْand she brought on كلَّevery حزنٍsorrow بعدَafter فرقتهاher departure
فهلْso, can...? لهاfor her أنto تُعيدَshe turns back into الحزنَsorrow أفراحاjoys
And she brought every sorrow in the wake of her departure;
After her parting, she replaced all sorrow with joy -
So can she turn sorrow back into joys?
Can she bring back joy after grief?
