ألاLo! ياO سيّدmaster of العلماءthe scholars طرًّاall of them
ألا يا سيّد العلماء طرًّا
ورَبَّand lord of الجودgenerosity والمجدِand glory الأثيلِdeep-rooted
ورَبَّ الجود والمجدِ الأثيلِ
O master of all the scholars,
O master of all scholars,
and lord of generosity and deep-rooted glory!
And lord of generosity and deep-rooted glory,
وياand O حُلْوَsweet of المذاقةsavor يومَwhen يُفتيhe gives a ruling
ويا حُلْوَ المذاقة يومَ يُفتي
بجودwith generosity of الطبعnature والفعلand action الجميلِgracious
بجود الطبع والفعل الجميلِ
O you, sweet to the taste when you pronounce judgment
And O you of sweet savor when giving a ruling,
with innate generosity and gracious deeds!
With generosity of nature and gracious deeds.
أضَرَّhas caused harm بناto us فَدَتْكmay it ransom you النَّفسthe soul جوعhunger
أضَرَّ بنا فَدَتْك النَّفس جوع
ويعجبناand pleases us مربّىpreserve الزنجفيلginger
ويعجبنا مربّى الزنجفيل
Hunger has afflicted us—may my soul ransom you—
Hunger has harmed us—may my soul be your ransom—
and candied ginger would delight us.
And ginger preserve delights us.
وأذهَلَناand has dazed us إليهfor it اليومَtoday شوقٌlonging
وأذهَلَنا إليه اليومَ شوقٌ
فكِدْناso we nearly أنto نصيرَbecome بلاwithout عقولminds
فكِدْنا أن نصيرَ بلا عقول
Longing for it today has left us so dazed
And longing for it has dazed us today,
that we nearly lost our minds.
So we almost lost our minds.
ومثلُكَand one like you منone who يجودُgives generously بماof what لديهhe has
ومثلُكَ من يجودُ بما لديه
ويسخوand gives lavishly بالكثيرwith much منfrom القليلlittle
ويسخو بالكثير من القليل
One such as you gives freely of what he has,
And one like you gives generously of what he has,
and gives much even from the little.
And gives abundantly out of little.
