في المُصيبات المُلِمَّه
O master, be patient

قد مضَتْ زوجُك للأُخ
رىcompletion of 'hereafter' وأَمضىand carried out اللهُGod حُكمَهHis decree
رى وأَمضى اللهُ حُكمَه
Your wife has departed for the oth—
Indeed, your wife has passed to the other
er world, and God has fulfilled His decree.

وكذاكand likewise النَّاسpeople تمضيpass away
وكذاك النَّاس تمضي
أمَّةًa community منfrom بعدafter أمَّهa community
أمَّةً من بعد أمَّه
Thus do people pass away,
And likewise do people pass away,
one generation after another.
one community after another.
أَيُّwhat شخصٍperson لمdid not ترعهalarm him
أَيُّ شخصٍ لم ترعه
الحادثاتُcalamities المدلهِمَّهdark
الحادثاتُ المدلهِمَّه
What person has not been frightened
What person has not been alarmed
by calamities looming dark?
by dark calamities?
وزعيمand the leader القومthe people ماnot ريwas dismayed (first fragment)
وزعيم القوم ما ري
عcompletion of 'was dismayed' وغالىand carried off الموتdeath حمَّهhis loved one
ع وغالى الموت حمَّه
The people's leader was not terri—
And the leader of the people was not
fied, though death drove its fever high.
dismayed, though death carried off his loved one.
كمhow many أصابَstruck down الحتفُdeath منَّاof us
كم أصابَ الحتفُ منَّا
كلَّماwhenever سدُّدَaimed سهمهhis arrow
كلَّما سدُّدَ سهمه
How many of us has death struck
How many of us has death struck down
whenever it aimed its arrow!
each time he aimed his arrow!
رحمةُmercy اللهGod عليهاupon her
رحمةُ الله عليها
رحمةًmercy تنزلdescending جمَّهabundant
رحمةً تنزل جمَّه
May God's mercy be upon her—
God's mercy be upon her,
abundant mercy descending.
mercy descending in abundance.
جاوَرَتْshe has dwelt beside ربًّاa Lord كريماًgenerous
جاوَرَتْ ربًّا كريماً
لنعيمٍfor bliss ولِنعْمَهand for blessing
لنعيمٍ ولِنعْمَه
She has come to dwell beside a generous Lord,
She has come to dwell beside a generous Lord,
in bliss and blessed grace.
for bliss and for blessing.
قلْsay لهاto her وادعُand pray وأَرِّخand record the date
قلْ لها وادعُ وأَرِّخ
أَنتِyou (feminine) فيin الجنَّاتthe gardens of Paradise رحمهRahma (literally, mercy)
أَنتِ في الجنَّات رحمه
Speak to her, pray, and inscribe the date:
Say to her, pray, and record the date:
“You are in the Gardens—a mercy.”
You are in the gardens of Paradise, Rahma.
