My companion said to me, while we were at Salʿ,

lamenting to one another what love had made us suffer:

“Leave off weeping, for tears have wounded

    your eyes and eyelids.

And love leads to humiliation, so tell me:

how long must we suffer love, while you endure humiliation?

Indeed, the one you used to choose as a close friend

    before this has already departed.”

I said, “He had pledged to honor for me

my covenants.” He said to me, “Indeed he had.

Did beauties before him ever keep covenants,

or did fair women before him ever fulfill a pledge?

    فإيّاك بعدها الغزلانا

    And the gazelles’ skittishness makes estrangement more likely;

    so henceforth beware of gazelles.”

He said it as passion kindled in the heart

ardent longing, and set the fires ablaze.

And my heart concealed a guarded passion,

and my eyelids poured out unrestrained tears.

And he repeated the words until we departed,

and alighted on the lower slope of Naʿmān.
