He recalled a bygone time at al-Khayf,

and saw those traces in the dwelling.

So he spent the day wiping away precious tears,

and the night wrestling with cruel longing.

May God water the dark-lipped beloved's home with rain,

then Rama, then al-Munhana, then al-Ghamim,

and revive our dwellings at al-‘Aqiq,

and shower them with all-embracing rain.

We stood by them at forenoon, while love

    melted hearts and wasted bodies.

The turns of time dealt unjustly with us,

and time was oppressive and ruthless.

    فحلّوا الغُوَير وحلَّ الحَطيما

    They were at Jam‘, and so was the sorrowful lover;

then they settled in al-Ghuwayr, while he settled in al-Hatim.

The breezes of the lover's life passed,

and, to his humiliation, returned upon him as scorching winds.

Nights passed as a phantom passes,

    once bliss, they became hell.

a heady fragrance and sweet-smelling musk.

Among the things that grieved me were al-Ghuwayr's gray doves,

repeating a distressing cry among the great trees.

Yet whenever a flash of lightning appeared,

I scattered strung pearls of tears.

and in all else you have always been forbearing.

and bewildered minds with what you made clear.

at times a scholar, at times a sage.

the greatest in worth and the noblest in character.

    and after that became barren.
