Asma has a dwelling where the sands end.
Names has a house where the sands are cut off,
May a pouring cloud water it with evening thunder.
Watered in the evenings by a flowing spring,
وجَرَّتْand it trailed عليهاover it الذَّيلَthe hem وطفاءُa dense cloud أبرَقَتْflashed lightning

And a dense cloud, flashing lightning, trailed its hem over it;
It dragged its tail and its lightning flashed,
And moved on; from its rumbling came a camel-bull's bellow.
Then it departed while its thunder roared.

And I do pray for torrents of rain to water it,
And I beg the rains of life for her,
Although my tears can take the place of the downpour.
Though my tears cannot substitute for the downpours.

Its earliest days were seasons of union.
Her first trysts were seasons of union.

And by every tear-drenched eyelid.

Woe to you, O my heart, because of the soft gazes!

Unbridled passion did its work in the enclosure
As fires work upon thick logs.
As fires do their work on sturdy firewood.

And though my tears overflow, I won’t cease shedding them,
From a liver scorched and an anguish that scorches;
For from a burning liver and blazing agony do I pray and weep.

And from the injustice of an age: if I found anyone fair within it,
The tyranny of Time! If I but saw in it a fair judge,
I would bring it before a just judge over that wrong.
I would take it to task and judge it with justice.

Seeking some need, content with a little out of much?
On a bed too narrow to accommodate my sparse belongings.

A companion of the ignorant lout and the base envier.
Ally of the vile ignoramus and despicable envier.

A people have devoted themselves to every ignorant man,
And folk have flocked around every fool
As the people of Moses devoted themselves to the calf.
As nations clustered around the calf of Moses.

One whom I would not accept as a place to tread seeks to rival me;
He who I don’t please with my doctrine
I honor my sandal too much to compare it with him.
Assails me and deems his slipper too good to measure up to mine.

One who counts ignorance his pride has vied with me in glory;
And he in whom ignorance is a point of pride
And one whose kind is not mine has debated me.
Has rivaled me though we share no resemblance.

They’ve taken my place – so they claim –
Yet there he neither tied a knot nor untied one.
But no pact was made, no agreement settled there.

They would find no equal of mine—how could they find someone like me?
For they never found my equal, nor will my equal be found.

For which standing humiliated in this world is hard to bear?
Whose lot, in this lowly life, is nothing but humiliation?

To quench my burning thirst when it strips off my fetters.
To let my worries subside when grief torments me.

He would not clamor in blaming me or persist in reproaching me.
He wouldn’t blame or reproach me.

As they feared giving on the day of bounty.
As they feared generosity on the day of bestowal.

And to praise him is an obligation upon the likes of me.

No saddlebags have rested except through his kindness.

Ask the brave among men about the essence of the sword's blade.

I am fruitful, ceaselessly transmitting his praises.

Your words, nothing surpasses them from every bee's comb.

Veiled by no night, for doubt is like the night.

And pens came to write whatever you dictate.
And pens began writing what you dictated.

Indeed, the authority to take from your words is conclusive.

You were dismissed, not stripped of learning and excellence.
You've been removed but not from knowledge and merit.

But one like you is never lowered by dismissal while he lives.
And the likes of you is never debased by removal.
