ذكرتُI remembered علىamid النوىseparation عهدthe days of التَّصابيyouthful dalliance
ذكرتُ على النوى عهد التَّصابي
فأشجانيso it saddened me وهيَّجَand stirred بعضَsome of ماwhat بيis within me
فأشجاني وهيَّجَ بعضَ ما بي
Amid separation, I recalled the days of youthful dalliance;
I recalled the covenant of friendship on the ruins,
so it saddened me and stirred some of what was within me.
So it revived me and stirred some of what was inside me,
وشوَّقنيand made me yearn معالمfamiliar places كنتُI was فيهاin them
وشوَّقني معالم كنتُ فيها
بأنعمin the most blissful طيبِsweetness عيشٍlife مستطابdelightful
بأنعم طيبِ عيشٍ مستطاب
And places stirred my longing, where I had once lived
And made me yearn for the places I used to be in,
amid the sweetest ease of a delightful life.
With the finest and most pleasant life.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night احِنُّI yearn منfrom شوقlonging إليهاfor them
فَبِتُّ احِنُّ من شوق إليها
كماjust as حنَّyearned المشيبُgray-haired age إلىfor الشبابyouth
كما حنَّ المشيبُ إلى الشباب
So, filled with longing, I spent the night pining for them,
So I spend the night moaning with yearning for it,
as gray-haired age yearns for youth.
Like an old man yearns for his youth.

مُلِثُّ القَطر منهلّ الرباب
May those dwellings and their inhabitants be watered
The rain watered those lands and its inhabitants,
by unceasing rain from clouds pouring down.
With abundant, dripping rain from the clouds.

For many a gazelle there, within its covert,
So how many gazelles are there, in the meadows,
stands in for a forest lion with its deadly assault.
That take the place of an absent lion with their charm?

ويعذب في تجنّيه عذابي
My life for the one I would ransom with my life,
I would sacrifice myself for whoever I ransom with myself,
and in his unjust cruelty my torment grows sweet.
And he torments me, tormenting my torment.

And I have a heart that has flared into flame,
I have a heart burning with inflammation,
and I have tears that have followed one another in a stream.
And I have tears that flow in outpouring.

And many a night grew long with sighs from me,
I have nights that drag on with my sighs,
nor grew shorter because of my grief and dejection.
And my sorrow and gloom do not shorten.

And how many a sorrow has wounded my heart,
How much worry has wounded my heart,
and my reproach of time for it went on and on.
And how long has my reproach of it lasted?

وأزعجني عن الأحباب بينٌ
وبالبينِand through separation انزعاجيmy distress واضطرابيand my turmoil
وبالبينِ انزعاجي واضطرابي
And separation drove me away from those I love,
Estrangement from loved ones disturbs me,
and in separation lie my distress and turmoil.
And separation disturbs and confuses me.

Hopes console me with their promise,
Hope makes excuses to me with its promises,
but what comfort lies in a lying promise?
Yet promises are nothing but lies.

And they tempt me with what I do not hope for;
It makes me covet what I do not hope for,
and can I hope for a drink from a mirage?
Can mirage water quench a thirst?

فأبْقَتْني وقد أخَذَتْ صحابي
And what has death done to my companions?
Death has not treated my companions the same as me,
It left me alive, though it had taken my friends.
For it has taken them and left me behind.

And I have no one to whom I might turn one day,
I have no one to complain to,
if one day I should be bitten by a fang.
If one day it bites me with its fangs.

Nor did my hands write a decree for it,
My hands have written no letter to it,
but it was in the Mother of the Book.
Though it was recorded in the Mother of the Book.

Separation made me taste both sweet and bitter,
The ruins made me taste sweet and bitter,
and passion made me swallow honey mixed with bitter sap.
And passion made me drink vinegar and poison.

I range through the lands, seeking them out,
I roam the lands and wander them,
yet my striving in the quest availed me nothing.
Yet my striving brings me no gains.

What desolate place have I not trodden,
and not urged my riding camels across its trackless waste?
Disturbing its riders with my worries?

I wore its dust and left it
as a keen sword is drawn from its sheath.
Like a sword drawn from its sheath.

I attained the abode of might
through Abd al-Qadir, lofty in rank.
Only with the most high and noble servant of the Capable One.

And our striving won us no desires until
We attained our wish from striving only
we alighted in his spacious dwellings.
When we descended in his vast abodes.

Generous, of fine character, and benevolent,
Generous, kind morals, devout,
on the day of giving, more bountiful than clouds.
Brighter than clouds on days of giving.

For he was never asked for bounty and generosity
No sooner asked for than freely given,
without swiftly offering reward and reply.
Swift to reward and answer.

Whenever I returned from him with blessings,
When asked about His blessings,
I praised my happy return, thanks to his bounty.
I praise, thanking Him for my happy outcome.

my attraction is traced to none but him.
And none but Him draws near my heart.

So, O full moon of beauty—I do not dispute it—
O full moon of beauty, peerless,
and O master of kindness—I show no partiality—
O Lord of beauty, matchless protector.

For Your glory with answered prayers.

Seeking only reward, not compensation.

Of that which gladdened me and dispelled my care
was my nearness to your presence and my drawing close.
Was my drawing near and approaching You.

To relieve harm or ward off affliction.

A marshal judged rightly in what he bestowed on you—
Fate struck with what it adorned you with,
a counselor of truth and sound judgment.
A fate of truth and right.

Your deputy fulfilled his role
the affairs of rule with awe-inspiring might.
Governing with awe-inspiring force.

Known for leveling difficulties.

For lions do not care for the barking of dogs.

so today you are more unassailable than an eagle.
Today, too lofty for any punishment.

Embodying wonders and marvels.

So permit me to ransom myself by departing.

I am content to take my homecoming as my spoils.
I acquiesced to return with only the spoils.
