A heart, like your gaze, has grown ailing,
My heart became sick like your eyelids,
And a body, like your waist, complains of wasting.
And my body complained of emaciation like your waist,

And your love made it lean
As you see, weak and thin.
As you see it weak and thin.

So be gentle with it, for in your love
In a state of passion that will never change.
It will not change its state of passion.

He passes the night with an often-sleepless eye,
It spends the night sleepless
So he has tasted only a little sleep.
And scarcely knows a little slumber.

And lightning stirred his longing in the depths of night,
Lightning makes it long for the wings of night
And the dove's lamenting coo by night.
And the cooing of a dove makes it sleepless at night.

So it complains of the burning of passion in the morning
And pours torrents from both his eyes.
And sheds tears from its eyelids.

And the north wind's breezes intoxicate me,
And the northern breezes intoxicate me
So I become as though I had been given wine.
Until I become as if I have drunk wine.

And how many a tear has the lovesick lover drunk,
And how much the youth has drunk of tears
In remembrance of loved ones, for a long time.
Remembering the loved ones for so long.

But it does not quench the thirst of passion,
And how could tears quench that burning thirst?
And how can tears quench thirst?

And how many, like the tormented lover, have fallen slain!
And many like them died.

While the abode of patient endurance has grown barren.
And patience became impossible.

When you left on your journey
You seized my heart in a grievous seizure.
You took my heart most cruelly.

On the morning the drivers of the camel-litters set out,
The morning the camel-litters departed
Traversing the trackless wastes, mile after mile.
Roaming from landmark to landmark.

Why, then, did you not send us the breeze,
Why did you not send us the breeze?
So the breeze might be a messenger to us?
So it would be a messenger to us.

You begrudged a phantom's visit to the lover,
You were stingy to send an apparition to visit the lover,
And I had never known a miser among you.
And I did not know you to be stingy.

You barred the path of the vision of sleep,
You closed off the way for the imagination of souls
So the phantom found no path toward me.
So no specter found its way to me.

Stop, my friend, short of cheating me
And let no friend ever forsake his friend.
And let not the friend abandon his friend.

So we may pay the dues of dwellings worn away,
Let us fulfill the rights of the abode of chastity
And weep for those dwellings, thus watering their ruins.
And weep for the abode and water its sand.

For your eyes he has grown humble, O sister of the oryx,
My eyes have been humbled for your eyes
So he became lowly, though he had been mighty and august.
And the noble and mighty became insignificant.

How long will I please and satisfy the slanderers
And listen, in love, to gossip and hearsay?
And listen to this one’s words and that one’s?

Indeed, the reproacher has blamed me for loving you,
The censors blamed me for loving you
And cast a heavy utterance upon my ear.
And cast heavy words upon my hearing.

The censors have gone far astray
And attempted a thing that proved impossible.
And attempted something now impossible.

When one loses the way of wealth
Then Uthman's lights guide the way.
The lights of Uthman guide the way,

His branches thrived as his roots grew sound
So his branches were good, and his roots were good.
Bearing wholesome fruit and roots.

So may excellence never witness obscurity in him.
And merit in him knew no decline.

Why should the glorious not attain the heights?
Who stretches a long arm toward glory?
Stretching out his arm to lasting glory.

They found him a deep shade in which to shelter.
They saw him as ample, sheltering shade.
