O you who stay awake acquiring knowledge,

seeking through it a master's standing:

without this, you can pass for a jurist—

so widen your sleeve, then put on a turban.

And wear a taylasan of grey cloth,

and tuck it in at the shoulders, and finish dressing.

And sit with the people in debate,

not drawing on al-Bukhari or Muslim,

but only shouting and shaking a sleeve,

and stringing together 'no, no,' 'wal,' 'why, why.'

For I see no learning among them

beyond 'no' and 'I do not concede.'
