فيin مَشرِقِthe east المَجدِof glory نَجمُNajm (star) الدينِal-Din (of the faith) مَطلَعُهُhis rising-place
وَكُلُّand all أَبنائِهِhis sons شُهُبٌshooting stars فَلاso may ... not أَفَلواthey set
In glory's east lies Najm al-Din's rising-place;
In the east where glory dawns, the star of faith arises
and all his sons are shooting stars—may they never set.
And all his sons are comets that never set
جاءواthey came كَيَعقوبَlike Jacob وَالأَسباطَand the Tribes إِذwhen وَرَدواthey arrived
عَلىto العَزيزِal-Aziz (the mighty one) مِنfrom أَرضِthe land الشامِof al-Sham (Syria) وَاِشتَمَلواand they gathered together
They came like Jacob and the Tribes when they arrived
They came like Jacob and his brethren when they entered
before al-Aziz from the land of al-Sham and gathered together.
Upon the Viceroy from the land of Syria and gathered
لَكِنَّbut يوسُفَYusuf (Joseph) هَذاthis جاءَcame إِخوَتُهُhis brothers
وَلَمand not يَكُنthere was بَينَهُمbetween them نَزعُstrife وَلاnor زَلَلُmisstep
But to this Yusuf his brothers came,
But this Joseph, his brothers came to him
and between them there was neither strife nor misstep.
Among them no conflict or discord fell
وَمَلكوand they ruled أَرضَthe land مِصرَof Egypt فيin شَماخَتِهِhis lofty majesty
وَمِثلَهاand its like لِرِجالٍfor men مِثلُهُمlike them نَزَلواthey settled
And they ruled the land of Egypt in his lofty majesty,
And they ruled the land of Egypt in its glory
and its like belongs to men like them who settled there.
And the like of it for men like them descended
أَبوAbu (father of) المُظَفَّرِal-Muzaffar (the victorious) مَأوىa refuge كُلِّevery مُضطَهِدٍpersecuted person
بِحِلمِهِfor his forbearance وَنِداهُand his bounty يُضرَبُis set المَثَلُthe example
Abu al-Muzaffar is the refuge of every persecuted soul;
Abu al-Muzaffar, refuge of the persecuted
his forbearance and bounty are proverbial.
For his patience, justice is exemplified
مَهماhowever يَمِلmay swerve جائِرَa tyrant أَوor عائِثٌa ravager عَمَّهُwandering blindly
فَعِندَthen before عَدلِthe justice of صَلاحِSalah (righteousness) الدينِal-Din (of the faith) يَعتَدِلُhe becomes upright
However a tyrant or a blindly wandering ravager may swerve,
However much an oppressor or aggressor insists
before Salah al-Din's justice he is set straight.
With Saladin's justice, he is moderated
أَحياrevived بِهِthrough him اللَهُGod مِصراًEgypt فَهيَso she ناشِرَةٌalive again
وَاِفتَكَّهاand freed her مِنfrom عَدوٍan enemy ماnot بِهِagainst him قِبَلُpower to withstand
Through him God revived Egypt, so she lives again,
He revived Egypt with it, so it blossoms
and freed her from an enemy none could withstand.
And delivered it from an enemy, than which none worse
كَمhow many لِلفِرِنجِfor the Franks بِهاin her وِرداًa watering place وَمُنتَجَعاًand a pasture
وَنارُهُمand their fire حَولَهاaround her تَذكوblazes وَتَشتَعِلُand flares
How many watering places and pastures the Franks had there,
How many citadels and retreats for the Franks in it
while their fire blazed and flared around her.
And their fires around it kindle and flare
فَأَطفَأَso he quenched الناصِرُal-Nasir (the champion) المَنصورُthe victorious جَذوَتَهُمtheir glowing brand
وَأَدبَرواand they fled بِقُلوبِwith hearts شَهمُهاtheir boldest وَجِلُafraid
So al-Nasir, the victorious, quenched their glowing brand,
But al-Nasir al-Mansur quenched their embers
and they fled with hearts whose boldest was afraid.
And they fled with hearts apprehensive and fearful
مَلكٌa king تَقَلَّدَdonned سِلكُthe strand المُلكِof kingship مُنتَظِماًwell-strung
وَقالَand he said لِلمالِto wealth هَذاthis مِنكَin exchange for you ليfor me بُدلُa recompense
A king who donned the well-strung necklace of kingship,
A king who assumed the path of kingship orderly
and said to wealth, 'This is mine in exchange for you.'
And said of wealth, “This, from you, is my exchange”
فَفَرَّقَso he scattered المالَwealth جَمعاًa gathering لِلقُلوبِof hearts بِهِwith it
وَحَسبُهُand enough for him فيهِمُregarding them إِدراكُattainment ماwhat سَأَلواthey asked for
So he scattered wealth to gather hearts with it,
So he distributed wealth, gathering hearts with it
and he was content that they received what they asked.
And for them, attaining what they sought sufficed
إِنَّindeed المُلوكَthe kings الَّذينَwhose اِمتَدَّendured أَمرُهُمtheir rule
لَمdid not يَخزِنواthey hoarded المالَwealth بَلrather مَهماwhatever حَوَواthey possessed بُذِلواthey gave freely
Indeed, the kings whose rule endured
Indeed, the kings whose command spread
did not hoard wealth, but gave freely whatever they possessed.
Did not hoard wealth, but whatever they grasped, they gave
كَذاthus السِياسَةُstatecraft فَالأَجنادُfor the troops لَوif عَلِمواthey knew

Such is statecraft: if the troops knew
Thus is politics, for if soldiers knew
the king's miserliness, and hardship came, they would be left unaided.
The stinginess of the king, and hardship came, they would abandon
لَتَظفُرَنَّyou shall surely win بِماthat which لَمnot يَحوهُhe possessed it مَلِكٌa king
أَباO Abu (father of) المُظَفَّرِal-Muzaffar (the victorious) حَقّاًtruly حَظَّهُfavored him الأَزَلُeternity
You shall surely win what no king has possessed,
You will certainly attain what no king possessed,
O Abu al-Muzaffar—truly favored by eternity.
Indeed, Abu al-Muzaffar, eternal destiny is your right

The proof of this lies in counsels joined
Proof of that is views associated
with prudence and resolve, with which the earlier ruler was not specially endowed.
With wisdom and resolve, none preceded with them

Alexander became master of all the people of his age
Alexander surpassed the people of his time together
at twenty years of age, and his resources grew.
At twenty, and stratagems extended for him
وافىhe reached الثَلاثينَthirty وَالأَقطارُand the lands أَجمَعُهاall of them

He reached thirty, and all the lands
He reached thirty and all the regions entirely
were obedient to him, along with earth's kings and religious communities.
Were obedient to him, and the kings of earth and nations
