O south wind, carry
O South Wind, bear a burden for me: the greeting of a lovestruck heart, and adorn yourself with grace.
A lovesick lover's greeting from me, and adorn yourself.
Deliver peace to the people of my affection, and scatter the scent of cloves from the fragrance you carry.

And convey peace to the dear folk I love, and scatter
Enter the tents of the noble sons and tell them that I pass the night in burning anguish and turmoil.
From the fragrance you bear, the scent of carnations.
My eyelids have grown accustomed to sleeplessness due to your absence, so sweet slumber has become a stranger to me.

أني أبيتُ بحرقة وتبلبل
Pass through the tents of the sons of the noble, and tell them
How many nights have I spent in deep regret, like one suffering eye-sickness, tossing in misery.
That I spend my nights in burning anguish and turmoil.
Sleepless, possessed by sorrow, while the night stretches long; when will I see the darkness dispelled by our reunion?

فلذا غدا طيبُ المنام بمعزل
My eyelids have grown used to sleeplessness through separation from you;
What harm would it do my beloveds if they were to send a phantom in my sleep to visit me in their image?
And so the sweetness of sleep has become remote.
Everything I endure for the sake of love is easy, save for being parted from the finest beloved.

How many a night have I spent lamenting,
Fulfill this trust, O South Wind—my ultimate desire is to be reunited, O breeze of the North.
Like a sore-eyed man's night, in misery and restless tossing,
And guide me to those whose conversation in the gardens is more fragrant and sweeter than the aroma of cloves.

Sleepless and sorrow-laden, his night drawn long.
Bringing to me rare gems and witty delights, and kindnesses scented with perfume and honey.
So when will I see my night dispelled by reunion?
My soul attempted patience in their absence, but I was told: "Desist! This is impossible; woe to you, turn back from this thought."

What harm would it do my loved ones if they sent
How can one have patience away from them, when they are who they are? The masters of my covenant, with bonds made perfect.
A dream-phantom to visit me, taking form?
Can the uncertainty of time undo what they have bound? Yet how often have my own knots been undone by mere fantasies.

My soul is a ransom for them and for their land, the purest of abodes—oh, what a glorious home!
Is easy, save parting from the noblest beloved.
I offer myself for a people—none but they are called to exclude the elite group, the model of the first order.

Deliver the trust, O south wind; my aim
It suffices them as honor and everlasting pride that they bear the towering Hashemite banner.
Is reunion, O breeze of the north.
He singled them out, distinguished them, and chose them; the Lord of mankind selected them for this without pretense.

And bring my greeting to those in the gardens, whose talk
They are the most worthy of praise, though perhaps their rights have been lost due to enemies and censure.
Is more fragrant and sweeter than the perfume of carnations.
If others were stingy with wealth and showed no generosity, they were bountiful in giving their very souls without hesitation.

Those who sacrifice their lives and their precious possessions in the love of our Owner, the Great, the Exalted.
And delicate charms, fragrant and honey-sweet.
How the Most Merciful delights in their deeds on the day of battle—excellent is the action of the perfect ones.

I tried to make my soul endure without them; I was told:
The truthful, the patient amidst the clamor of war, bearers of burdens that none other could bear.
Stop! That is impossible; woe to you—turn away from it!
While others indulge extravagantly in worldly pleasures, they seek the clashing of battalions in the field.

To them, the most delicious feast is the flesh of the enemy, and their blood is like fresh, cool water from a spring.
The keepers of my covenant, bound by perfect pledges?
They descend into every narrow, distressful strait, defying the enemy without a trace of fear.

Not even the youngest among them knows how to complain, nor do they lament calamity when the fire burns.
Have my bonds been loosened by imagined hopes!
There is none among them but a brave warrior striking hard, or a master skilled in every noble deed.

Save that fellowship and the foremost exemplars.
How they strove, how they pursued, and how they toughened themselves against calamities with sharp swords and eloquence.

The Lord of all creation—for this, without contrivance.
To them, the day of battle is a day of rejoicing; at the battle cry, they walk forward with exultation.

Their blood is spilled and their swords are unsheathed, wiped upon the garments of every fallen foe.
Rights are lost through enemies and reproach.
They do not grieve for the fallen; rather, to them, the death of martyrdom is the joy of one moving to a better realm.

Death by thin, shining blades is no flaw; the true flaw, to them, is dying like neglected cattle in the fields.
They freely offer their lives, without excuses.
