    وحبي لها بين الجوانح قد أرسى

    My heart refuses to forget the familiar haunts of Bursa;

    And my love for her has cast anchor between my ribs.

    فهيهات أن يسلو وهيهات أن ينسى

    I task it with forgetting her, though it is enamored;

    Yet it is far from finding solace, and far from forgetting.

    I have gone far from her—alas for my heart in her absence!

    And I left her behind, my heart still there behind me as I pass the evening.

    A land whose merit surpasses that of every town,

    Save the place for which visitors fasten their saddlecloths.

    سواها نجومٌ وهي أحسبها شمسا

    No excellence has passed her by, nor stopped short of her;

    Others are stars, while she, I reckon, is a sun.

    For me, it is impossible to behold another town

    Where faith and worldly life are pure, not unclean.

    به العلم مغروسٌ به كم ترى درسا

    And her renowned congregational mosque has never had an equal;

    In it knowledge is planted—how many lessons you see there!

    And her sultan—I mean the emir, her chief—

    In him Bursa took pride—how great a leader he is!

    به الفخر قد أمسى به الفضل قد أرسى

    And his lofty abode resembled a garden to me;

    In it glory has come to dwell; in it excellence has cast anchor.

    In her is the House of Osman, those great masters who

    Raised faith's beacon and spent themselves freely.

    فما شام هذا الدين في عصرهم نحسا

    Let whoever weeps for the faith weep for them;

    For this faith saw no misfortune in their time.

    So many scholars among them, and so many warriors for the faith!

    And how many a saint has chosen her for his grave!

    Ah, if only I knew: shall I dwell in her gardens?

    And Pinar Bash—shall I find joy of soul there?

    ويفرح محزون الفؤاد ولا يأسى

    So even the unamorous are stirred to love there on the feast day;

    And the sorrowful at heart rejoice and grieve no more.

    And how fare Çekirge and her palaces since our departure?

    You see them as the Pleiades when they stand at the center of the arc.

    And from beneath them a river flowed in a torrent,

    Resembling a serpent that has taken fright at a sound.

    فلست بسالٍ للأهالي ولا أنسى

    So suppose I force myself to forget her land;

    Yet I cannot cease yearning for her people, nor forget them.

    وإن غلاء الدار بالجار قد أمسى

    And for their sake I love her and long for her;

    And indeed a home's value has come to lie in its neighbor.

    وفي كل آن قد رأى ناظري أنسا

    People with whom I ceased to yearn for my family and my town;

    And at every moment my eye beheld comforting company.

    وأمنت لا غما أخاف ولا نكسا

    And I have been apart from my family since we came together;

    And I felt secure, fearing neither sorrow nor setback.

    Nobility of character and beauty of manners,

    And gentleness of temperament, and a grace never forgotten.

    May God send rain, in mercy and honor, upon

    The lands of Bursa where the beloved have settled.
