I long to see the gazelle of the deserts,

And watch for his dream-vision as the night journeys on.

And I seek his nearness, yet he grows more distant,

    Long averse to union.

And this gazelle honors no pledge,

Nor will he consent to keeping a neighbor company.

He struts in his coquetry and deliberately lashes out,

Rich in beauty, he will not humor anyone.

I jest with him, yet he will not accept jesting,

And ask him to argue, yet he will not argue.

And he reproaches me, clothing my heart in gladness,

For reproach quenches the heat of my fire.

So if he grants no union at all,

And brings the dream-vision near my dwelling and my home,

I tell my soul: 'Woe to you! Take heed—then melt away,

And die, for fate takes its course upon you.'

And he robs me of life whenever he appears,

With a face as radiant as daylight.
