قَد سَدَّدوا العالَمَ في وَجهِهِ

قَد سَدَّدوا العالَمَ في وَجهِهِ

وَا رُحمَتا لِلعاشِقِ المُستَهامْ

وَا رُحمَتا لِلعاشِقِ المُستَهامْ

They have aimed the world at his face.

They have blocked the world in its face

Alas, pity the love-crazed lover!

Oh, have mercy on the passionate lover

مُقَطَّعُ القَلبِ إِذا لَمَّهُ

مُقَطَّعُ القَلبِ إِذا لَمَّهُ

عادوا فَخَلُّوهُ كَسيراً حُطامْ

عادوا فَخَلُّوهُ كَسيراً حُطامْ

His heart is torn to pieces; whenever he mends it,

With a heart torn apart when it burns

they return and leave it broken, a wreck.

They returned to leave him broken debris

لَم يَترُكوا المِسكينَ في هَمِّهِ

لَم يَترُكوا المِسكينَ في هَمِّهِ

بَل حَمَّلوهُ كُلَّ عِبءِ المَلامْ

بَل حَمَّلوهُ كُلَّ عِبءِ المَلامْ

They did not leave the poor man alone in his grief,

They did not leave the poor man in his worries

but burdened him with the full weight of reproach.

Rather, they burdened him with all the blame

يا لائِمي في الحُبِّ دَعني فَقَد

يا لائِمي في الحُبِّ دَعني فَقَد

يَزدادُ بِاللَومِ سَعيرُ الغَرامْ

يَزدادُ بِاللَومِ سَعيرُ الغَرامْ

O you who reproach me for love, leave me, for indeed

Oh you who blame me in love, leave me be

the blaze of passion grows fiercer with reproach.

For with blame, the flames of passion grow

تُريدُ أَن تُطفِىءَ نارَ الجَوى

تُريدُ أَن تُطفِىءَ نارَ الجَوى

فَتُغرِقُ الصَبَّ الدُموعُ الجسامْ

فَتُغرِقُ الصَبَّ الدُموعُ الجسامْ

You wish to quench the fire of anguished longing,

You want to extinguish the fire of yearning

so copious tears drown the lovesick lover.

So the raging tears drown the resolute

سَلمى لَقَد تُهتُ فَهذي يَدي

سَلمى لَقَد تُهتُ فَهذي يَدي

سَلمى فَقودينيَ عَبرَ الظَلامْ

سَلمى فَقودينيَ عَبرَ الظَلامْ

Salma, I have lost my way, so here is my hand.

Salma, you are lost, here is my hand

Salma, then lead me through the darkness.

Salma, so guide me through the darkness

أَنتِ بَصيصُ النورِ في ناظِري

أَنتِ بَصيصُ النورِ في ناظِري

وَالخافِقِ الثائِرُ بَينَ العِظامْ

وَالخافِقِ الثائِرُ بَينَ العِظامْ

You are a glimmer of light in my eye

You are a ray of light in my eyes

and in the restless heart beating between the bones.

And the throbbing heart amidst the bones
