    مِن وَحيِهِ الأَشعارُ وَالإِلهامُ

    A festival is held in the recesses of our breasts;

From its prompting spring poems and inspiration.

    أَجمِلْ بِأَن تَتَحَقَّقَ الأَحلامُ

    A dream for which our souls have indeed thirsted;

How lovely that dreams should come true!

It has gathered the scattered; every land is a pearl

In its crown, with unity stringing them together.

So when the Nile complains of its pains,

The pains rend the Tigris's vitals.

And when the Far Maghreb cries out in the face of

A grave calamity, al-Sham answers the call.

The myths of the forefathers have vanished; all these lands

Are a homeland for us, if understanding were sound.

    وَالحالُ حالٌ وَالكَلامُ كَلامُ

    The tongue is worn out, and the pens have dried;

Yet things remain as they were, and words remain words.

The days passed us by; in them we did not follow

The paths of right judgment, and the years passed.

And the lost boat sailed bewildered

Over the vast sea, with illusions for its guide.

And the leaders quarreled, some heading east,

And others west, and bonds of kinship were severed.

Then the pulpits were clamorous and crowded,

With agitation and deception frothing upon them.

And behold, delusion has a pavilion there,

Pitched, where idols have been worshipped.

And the free man, son of a free man, is no mount

To be ridden, with a bridle curbing his heart and tongue.

So he speaks truth, fearing no reproach,

And truth is the most splendid thing Islam holds.

The days passed us by as we took comfort

In tomorrow; so dreams were lost in visions.

We kept saying, 'Tomorrow, tomorrow!' Were dreams ever fulfilled

    For those thirsting after tomorrow?

We kept saying, 'Tomorrow conscience will awaken in those

Who have lost it, and tyrants will act justly.'

We kept saying, 'They are dear ones; their blows

Are acceptable; they cause no pain.'

We kept being duped by promises, and we fell for

Lies, while deception did its work.

    يا وَيلَنا إِنَّ الهَوى أَقسامُ

    They came to us with clouds born of our divisions;

Woe to us! Indeed, desire is divided into factions.

Balfour—what is Balfour? What would his promise be,

Had our own deeds not been its ratification?

Indeed, with our own hands we wounded our heart,

And through us, suffering came to us.

We are estranged from love that unites,

Yet we are enamored of the desert of discord.

And calamity has split us into many tribes,

Yet among our enemies, calamity unites.

    O leaders—except those whom I deem above

All that is blameworthy, whom the censurer has passed by—

We are the victims; we seek no reward,

And the least of it is acknowledgment and public notice.

And have we no role to occupy us

Except a grand farewell and a salute?

    وَاِنظُر هُنالِكَ كَيفَ تُحنى الهامُ

    Say 'No,' follow it with deeds, and do not fear;

And look there at how heads are bowed.

    فَعَلى الجَماجِمِ تُركَزُ الأَعلامُ

    Melt your neck's shackle with your fire—it will melt;

For upon skulls the banners are planted.

And raise your edifice upon torn limbs; only

Upon it can glory be built and raised.

And seize your rights; never beg for them,

For those who stole the rights are vile.

This is your road to life; do not turn aside,

Al-Qassam has already walked it before you.
