Upon you be the peace of God, Qays ibn ‘Asim,
God's peace be upon you, Qays son of Asim,
Upon you be the peace of Allah, O Qays bin Asim,
and His mercy, for as long as He wills to show mercy—
And His mercy, as long as He wills to show mercy.
And His mercy, for as long as He wills to show mercy.
تَحِيَّةَa greeting مَنone whom أَلبَستَهُyou clothed him مِنكَfrom you نِعمَةًa favor
إِذاwhen زارَhe visited عَنfrom شَحطٍa great distance بِلادَكَyour lands سَلَّماhe offered greetings
the greeting of one whom you clothed in a blessing from yourself,
A greeting from one whom you clothed in your favor,
The greeting of one whom you have clothed with a favor,
who, whenever he came from afar to visit your land, saluted you.
Who, when he visited your lands from afar, offered greetings.
Who offers peace when visiting your land from afar.
فَماfor ... not كانَwas قَيسٌQays هُلكُهُhis death هُلكُthe death of واحِدٍone man
وَلَكِنَّهُbut he بُنيانُthe edifice of قَومٍa people تَهَدَّماcollapsed
For Qays’s death was not the death of one man;
For Qays's death was not the death of one man;
For the death of Qays was not the loss of a single man,
rather, it was the edifice of a whole people that came crashing down.
But he was a people's edifice that collapsed.
But rather it was the edifice of a people that collapsed.
