You raised my station by grace and generosity.

And You spoke to me with knowledge, forbearance, and loving friendship.

From You, not from the multitude, You filled my palm for me.

Yours is praise, O possessor of bounty, glory, and exaltedness.

Blessed are You: You give to whom You will and withhold.

The bride of divine manifestation unveils herself in my heart.

And my vessel is filled with spiritual insights.

And I hope in You, my Master, O giver of grace,

My God, my Creator, my refuge, and my haven.

To You I turn for refuge in hardship and ease.

If You care for me in every affair,

And I have gained this fortune through Your splendid grace,

Then I am untroubled: despite my faults, You have accepted me.

My God, if You disappoint me or drive me away,

Then whom can I hope in, and whose intercession can I seek?

I am the servant, a slave in bondage in every state.

Not a servant merely in ease or on account of my hardship.

Yours is the decision, whether in withholding or in giving to me.

My God, though my sin be great and plentiful,

Your pardon is greater and more boundless than my sin.

When my worldly life follows its paths as things stand,

And the days display their ignorance toward the servant,

I do not despair, but say, 'Perhaps it...'

My God, if I have given my soul what it desires,

Here I am, grazing in the garden of remorse.

My ease and my distress both trace back to You.

And I see my intoxication and my sobering arise from You.

And suppose I have been held back from the march of my rear guard,

My God, You see my state, my poverty, and my need,

And You hear my secret communion.

My robe is dyed with Your love among all creation.

And my skin is still being tanned by longing.

And in both states my heart is stung by its heat.

My God, do not cut off my hope, nor turn astray

My heart, for I have a pasture in the outpouring of Your bounty.

My wall has been built upon the foundation of Your beneficence.

And my heart never ceases to attend to remembrance.

And I cry out whenever ecstasy urges me:

My God, protect me from Your punishment, for I am

A captive, abased and fearful, bowing before You.

I have raised my plea to the loftiness of Your Essence.

May You now, through nearness, ease my choking anguish.

If I die affirming Your oneness, in keeping with my path,

My God, comfort me by prompting my defense,

When the grave is my abode and resting place.

I am the servant, cast in hope into the midst of the deep.

And the earth of my soul has been rocked by a tremor of passion.

And I can see no excuse, nor even part of a defense.

My God, even if You punish me for a thousand years,

The cord of my hope in You will not break.

I have asked You to pardon my sins out of grace.

For I have placed great trust in You.

So I pray, seeking intercession through the Chosen One, the Elect:

My God, let me taste the coolness of Your pardon on the day when neither

Sons nor wealth will be of any use there.

The tale of my passion for You remains widely told.

And You bought the soul when I was selling it.

So grant me safety from You, and do not be a source of dread.

My God, if You do not care for me, I am lost.

But if You care for me, I will not be lost.

My praise of You comes from all of me, through my tongues,

For every splendid deed You do toward me.

I committed a sin that turned my muzzle away from You.

My God, if You do not forgive one who does no good,

Then who is there for a sinner indulging in desire?

He is the servant who rose by his Master's grace,

On the morning his Master gave him the cup of love to drink.

I rely on You; for Your sake I have lost my own subsistence.

My God, though I fall short in seeking piety,

I knock at no doors but those of Your grace.

I drove love's reproacher away from me with that which...

And in You I became a youth, never ceasing to turn toward You.

So if my foot stumbles and my sin grows great,

My God, pardon my stumble and erase my guilt,

For I confess, fearful and pleading.

Your lover, once he finds You, is annihilated.

Far be it that You should find him concerned with anything else.

And here I am, hoping for grace, never turning away from You.

My God, if You disappoint me or drive me away,

What recourse have I, O Lord, or what can I do?

Can I remain, when manifestations of it have shone forth?

My God, love's companion stays awake by night.

My God, by the right of the Hashemite and his family,

Illuminate the gloomy hour of one burdened with all besides You.

And the ugliness of my sins denounces me.

The station of hoping for bounty is what
