You appeared to my heart as it had intended,

And sustained me with might and strength.

So, O you through whom love's anguish has grown within me,

I love you with two loves: the love of desire,

And a love because you are worthy of it.

My beloved is my ailment and my cure,

And he knows full well what he has recounted.

I say to him, as he enfolds me:

As for that which is the love of desire,

It is something that has absorbed me, to the exclusion of all but you.

Ah, perhaps the one who made me yearn—perhaps he

Will heal my heart with what made it ill.

Who made the heart ill with love for you?

And as for that of which you are worthy,

It is your lifting of the veils until I see you.

My heart is filled with the fierce anguish of love,

And my eye beholds sublime beauty.

And I have two states, both of which I behold:

So no praise is mine in this or that,

But yours is the praise in this and that.
