كنت بالأمس عند نفسي كثيفا

كنت بالأمس عند نفسي كثيفا

وأنا الآن صرت شيئاً لطيفا

وأنا الآن صرت شيئاً لطيفا

Yesterday, in my own eyes, I was dense;

Yesterday I was immersed in myself, dense,

And now I have become something subtle.

And now I have become something delicate.

خف جسمي وخفت الروح مني

خف جسمي وخفت الروح مني

فوجدت الصخر الثقيل خفيفا

فوجدت الصخر الثقيل خفيفا

My body grew light, and my spirit grew light,

My body lightened, and my soul in me lightened,

So I found the heavy rock light.

So I found the heavy rock to be light.

وبدت هكذا العوالم عندي

وبدت هكذا العوالم عندي

كلها تالداً لها وطريفا

كلها تالداً لها وطريفا

And thus the worlds appeared to me,

And thus the worlds appeared to me,

All of them, their ancient and their new alike.

All gentle, delicate and beautiful.

فاعجبوا يا عقول من وصف أمري

فاعجبوا يا عقول من وصف أمري

لطَّفتي معارفي تلطيفا

لطَّفتي معارفي تلطيفا

So marvel, O minds, at the description of my state:

So wonder, O minds, at the state of my affair -

My insights have made me subtle indeed.

My knowledge has refined and softened me.

ولقد صرت واحداً وكثيراً

ولقد صرت واحداً وكثيراً

ولقد جئت بالجميع لفيفا

ولقد جئت بالجميع لفيفا

And I have become one and many,

And indeed I have become one and many,

And I have come with all, gathered together.

And indeed I have brought all together, united.

صبغة الله وهي خلق وأمر

صبغة الله وهي خلق وأمر

ألفت فرقة الورى تأليفا

ألفت فرقة الورى تأليفا

God's coloring—and it is creation and command—

The dye of God - and it is creation and command -

Has brought divided creation into harmony.

Has harmonized the discord of existence.

كالمعاني تلوح في كلمات

كالمعاني تلوح في كلمات

لعقول نوت لها تعريفا

لعقول نوت لها تعريفا

Like meanings that gleam within words,

Like meanings flickering in words

For minds intent on defining them.

For minds it has interpreted and explained.

والذي قام بالجميع بعيد

والذي قام بالجميع بعيد

وقريب لا يقبل التكييفا

وقريب لا يقبل التكييفا

And He who sustains all is far

And He who established all is distant,

And near, admitting no description of how He is.

Yet near - beyond categorization.

جل وجه رأيته فمحاني

جل وجه رأيته فمحاني

نوره الحق إذ إليه أضيفا

نوره الحق إذ إليه أضيفا

Exalted is the face I beheld; then I was effaced

Glorious is His face - when I saw it,

By its true light, when it was ascribed to Him.

His light erased me, as to Him I was joined.

رتب في وجوده نحن عنه

رتب في وجوده نحن عنه

قد ظهرنا به له توصيفا

قد ظهرنا به له توصيفا

We are degrees within His existence; from Him

In His existence He arranged us from Him -

We have appeared through Him, as a description of Him.

We appeared through Him, by Him described.

معه ما لنا وجود لأنا

معه ما لنا وجود لأنا

قد وجدنا به إذا الجهل عيفا

قد وجدنا به إذا الجهل عيفا

Beside Him we have no existence, for we

With Him we have no existence, for our selves

Have come into being through Him, when ignorance was shunned.

We find through Him, once ignorance is banished.

وهي ذكري أئمة الحق يجرو

وهي ذكري أئمة الحق يجرو

ن قوياً في شأوها وضعيفا

ن قوياً في شأوها وضعيفا

And it is my remembrance; the leaders of Truth run—

And this is my remembrance of the Imams of Truth -

Strong and weak along its course.

Flowing strongly in their affair, weak or strong.
