We, the people of al-Sham, are God's scourge upon

His earth, according to the noblest hadith.

وبنا ممن يشا ينتقم ال

وبنا ممن يشا ينتقم ال

له أمر ظاهر لا يختفي

له أمر ظاهر لا يختفي

And through us vengeance is taken, on whomever He wills, by

God—a manifest matter, not concealed.

والذي نافقنا ليس على

والذي نافقنا ليس على

من بنا آمن بالمشترف

من بنا آمن بالمشترف

And whoever acts hypocritically toward us is not above

one who believes in us, in standing.

ليس منا كل من في أرضنا

ليس منا كل من في أرضنا

من سوى العارف والمعترف

من سوى العارف والمعترف

Not everyone in our land belongs to us—

none but the gnostic and the one who acknowledges.

مثل خير الناس قرني قد أتى

مثل خير الناس قرني قد أتى

في حديث ثابت مؤتلف

في حديث ثابت مؤتلف

Just as 'The best of people are my generation' was reported

in an established, consistent hadith.

ومراد المصطفى أتباعُهُ

ومراد المصطفى أتباعُهُ

بالهدى من كل شهم مقتفي

بالهدى من كل شهم مقتفي

And the Chosen One meant his followers

in guidance—every noble-hearted follower.

مع أن القرن للكل حوى

مع أن القرن للكل حوى

من ذوي الكفر وأهل الشرف

من ذوي الكفر وأهل الشرف

Though that generation encompassed everyone,

both unbelievers and people of honor.

وكذا هذا فنحن الغربا

وكذا هذا فنحن الغربا

بين أهلينا نجوم السُدَف

بين أهلينا نجوم السُدَف

And so it is here: we are the strangers

among our own people, stars in the darkness.

نحن يا من صرت مبلواً بنا

نحن يا من صرت مبلواً بنا

نهر طالوت فلا تغترف

نهر طالوت فلا تغترف

We are, O you who have been tried through us,

Talut's river, so do not scoop a handful.

قد تركنا سيرة الناس ولم

قد تركنا سيرة الناس ولم

نتبع غير أمور السلف

نتبع غير أمور السلف

We have left the ways of people and have not

followed anything but the practices of the forebears.

ديننا الإسلام لله بلا

ديننا الإسلام لله بلا

وقفة في أمرنا لا تقف

وقفة في أمرنا لا تقف

Our religion is submission to God, without

hesitation; do not waver over our affair.

ثم صرنا لسهام من ذوي ال

ثم صرنا لسهام من ذوي ال

نفس والتدبير مثل الهدف

نفس والتدبير مثل الهدف

Then we became, for the arrows of those given to

ego and scheming, like a target.

إن ترد فانظر إلى واحدنا

إن ترد فانظر إلى واحدنا

درة من ثوبه في صدف

درة من ثوبه في صدف

If you wish, look at one of us:

a pearl within the shell of his robe.

كلما مر بقوم عبثوا

كلما مر بقوم عبثوا

منه بالحال الشريف الأنف

منه بالحال الشريف الأنف

Whenever he passes a people, they make sport

of him for his noble, unbowed state.

وهو في غيظ وفي فرط أذى

وهو في غيظ وفي فرط أذى

دائماً منه لقبح النطف

دائماً منه لقبح النطف

And he is in rage and overwhelming pain,

always because of him, owing to the seed's vileness.

ليس هذا عبثاً قف واستمع

ليس هذا عبثاً قف واستمع

حكمة مني بها الجهل نفي

حكمة مني بها الجهل نفي

This is not idle play; stop and listen

to wisdom from me, by which ignorance is banished.

انتقام الله ممن شاء ذا

انتقام الله ممن شاء ذا

برجال الله أهل الغرف

برجال الله أهل الغرف

This is God's vengeance upon whomever He wills,

through the men of God, dwellers of the upper chambers.

أسلموا حتى غدوا في يده

أسلموا حتى غدوا في يده

كسياط لينات الطرف

كسياط لينات الطرف

They surrendered until they became, in His hand,

like whips with supple tips.

يضرب الله بهم من شاءه

يضرب الله بهم من شاءه

من عباد للهوى والسرف

من عباد للهوى والسرف

God strikes through them whomever He chooses

among the slaves of passion and excess.

فاحترز إن شئت أو شئت فلا

فاحترز إن شئت أو شئت فلا

وتهيأ للأسى والأسف

وتهيأ للأسى والأسف

So beware if you wish—or, if you wish, do not—

and prepare for sorrow and regret.

هم أولوا الجدب رجال سقطوا

هم أولوا الجدب رجال سقطوا

في يد الله على السر الخفي

في يد الله على السر الخفي

They are people of barrenness, men who have fallen

into God's hand, according to the hidden mystery.
