نحن معاني الوجود فيهِ

نحن معاني الوجود فيهِ

ونحن عنه كنطق فيهِ

ونحن عنه كنطق فيهِ

We are the meanings of existence within Him.

We are the meanings of existence in Him

And we are from Him, like speech within Him.

And we are the articulation about Him in Him

وما له عزَّ من مثيل

وما له عزَّ من مثيل

وما له جلَّ من شبيه

وما له جلَّ من شبيه

And He—exalted is He—has no equal.

And He has no peer of might

And He—majestic is He—has no likeness.

Nor a parallel of glory

إذا تجلى لنا محانا

إذا تجلى لنا محانا

بنوره الساطع النزيه

بنوره الساطع النزيه

When He reveals Himself to us, He effaces us

When He manifests Himself to us in splendor

With His radiant, pure light.

With His radiant untarnished light

وإن رأيناه لا نراه

وإن رأيناه لا نراه

إذ نحن في رتبة تليه

إذ نحن في رتبة تليه

And though we see Him, we do not see Him,

And even if we see Him we do not see Him

For we are in a rank that follows Him.

For we are of a rank below Him

وعلمنا ليس عند شخص

وعلمنا ليس عند شخص

محدِّثٍ لا ولا فقيه

محدِّثٍ لا ولا فقيه

And our knowledge is not with any person:

And our knowledge is not with anyone

Not a hadith scholar, nor a jurist,

Neither a speaker nor a jurist

ولا كبير ولا صغير

ولا كبير ولا صغير

ولا حليم ولا سفيه

ولا حليم ولا سفيه

Nor great nor small,

Neither big nor small

Nor forbearing nor foolish,

Neither forbearing nor foolish

سوى فتى صار جدَّ جدٍّ

سوى فتى صار جدَّ جدٍّ

له وأضحى أبا أبيه

له وأضحى أبا أبيه

Except a youth who became a grandfather's grandfather—

Except a youth who became the grandfather

His own—and became his father's father.

Of his grandfather and became the father of his father

وأصبح الجسم منه روحاً

وأصبح الجسم منه روحاً

بسره الله يجتبيه

بسره الله يجتبيه

And his body became spirit;

And the body became spirit through Him

Through his secret, God chooses him.

By the secret of Allah choosing him

وصار فرداً بحب فرد

وصار فرداً بحب فرد

يجل عنه وعن ذويه

يجل عنه وعن ذويه

And he became unique through love of the Unique One,

And he became singular in the love of the One

Who is exalted above him and his kin.

Transcending him and his kin

ولم يدع منزلاً رفيعاً

ولم يدع منزلاً رفيعاً

في الله إلا ويرتقيه

في الله إلا ويرتقيه

And he left no lofty station

And he left no sublime abode

In God without ascending to it.

In God without ascending it

وقد تعرى عن الأماني

وقد تعرى عن الأماني

وكل ما كان يرتجيه

وكل ما كان يرتجيه

And he stripped himself of wishes,

And he stripped himself of all hopes

And all that he once hoped for.

And all he used to desire

وذاب حتى انمحت رسوم

وذاب حتى انمحت رسوم

له ولاح الخفيُّ فيه

له ولاح الخفيُّ فيه

And he dissolved until there were no traces left

And melted until the features

Of him, and the Hidden shone forth within him.

Of him disappeared and the hidden became manifest in him

نصحتك اشرب كؤوس عشقي

نصحتك اشرب كؤوس عشقي

وخل ما كنت تتقيه

وخل ما كنت تتقيه

I counsel you: drink the cups of my passionate love,

I advise you drink the cups of my love

And leave aside what you used to fear.

And leave what you used to avoid

وكن فهيماً وعَى كلامي

وكن فهيماً وعَى كلامي

وعدِّ عن كل ما تعيه

وعدِّ عن كل ما تعيه

And be discerning, having grasped my words,

And be wise and understand my words

And pass beyond all that you comprehend.

And refrain from all you know

نحن الذين انتهت إلينا

نحن الذين انتهت إلينا

مقاصد الفاضل النبيه

مقاصد الفاضل النبيه

We are those in whom culminate

We are those unto whom

The aims of the virtuous, discerning one.

The purposes of the eminent prophet came

ونحن قوم إذا أتانا

ونحن قوم إذا أتانا

من لا يرى ربه نريه

من لا يرى ربه نريه

And we are a people: when there comes to us

And we are a people, when one

One who does not see his Lord, we show Him to him.

Who does not see his Lord comes to us, we show Him to him

ونكشف الحق في المعاني

ونكشف الحق في المعاني

وفي المباني التي تقيه

وفي المباني التي تقيه

And we unveil the Real in meanings,

And we uncover the truth in the meanings

And in the forms that shield Him.

And in the structures that contain it

نراه في كل ما كرهنا

نراه في كل ما كرهنا

وكل ما نحن نشتهيه

وكل ما نحن نشتهيه

We see Him in all that we have disliked,

We see Him in all that we hated

And all that we desire.

And all that we desire

وليس بالحال يدري منا

وليس بالحال يدري منا

سوى الذي صار يقتفيه

سوى الذي صار يقتفيه

And none learns of the state from us

And none among us knows the state

Except the one who has come to follow it.

Except the one who came to follow it

وزادنا ربنا علوماً

وزادنا ربنا علوماً

بنور وجه له وجيه

بنور وجه له وجيه

And our Lord has increased our knowledge

And our Lord increased us in knowledge

Through the light of His noble face.

With the light of His noble face
