So, O you who said to us, "Indeed, I am I,"

O You who said "Behold, it is I"

We have come to you in poverty, O self-sufficient one.

We came to You in poverty, O Wealthy One

وأنت الذي لم تزل محسنا

وأنت الذي لم تزل محسنا

وعند الصباح وعند المسا

وعند الصباح وعند المسا

And you are the one who has never ceased doing good.

You who never ceased being Beneficent

And in the morning and in the evening,

In the morn and eve

نهيم اشتياقاً بفرط الأسى

نهيم اشتياقاً بفرط الأسى

عهدناك بَرّاً بنا مؤنسا

عهدناك بَرّاً بنا مؤنسا

We wander in yearning, overwhelmed by sorrow.

We yearn with excessive sorrow

We have known you as kind to us, bringing us solace.

We knew You as a Kind Companion

وعودتنا كلَّ فضلٍ عسى

وعودتنا كلَّ فضلٍ عسى

يعود الذي منك عوَّدتنا

يعود الذي منك عوَّدتنا

And you have accustomed us to every bounty; may

And You promised us every grace

what you have accustomed us to receive from you return.

That which comes from You, You granted us

سراة الهوى بالهوى وُلِّهُوا

سراة الهوى بالهوى وُلِّهُوا

وفيك عن الغير قد تُوِّهُوا

وفيك عن الغير قد تُوِّهُوا

Love's nobles have been driven mad by love.

The passionate lovers are confused in passion

And in you they have indeed been lost, away from all else.

And in You from others they became lost

إليك كفوف الدعا وَجَّهُوا

إليك كفوف الدعا وَجَّهُوا

مساكينك الشعث قد مُوِّهُوا

مساكينك الشعث قد مُوِّهُوا

Toward you they have turned their palms in prayer.

To You hands of supplication turned

Your disheveled paupers have indeed been gilded

Your disheveled poor ones became lost

بحبك إذ هو أقصى المنى

بحبك إذ هو أقصى المنى

لقد جاء من فرعنا أصلُكم

لقد جاء من فرعنا أصلُكم

with love of you, for it is the utmost wish.

In Your love since it is the ultimate wish

Your root has indeed come from our branch.

Indeed from our branch came your root

ونحن الذي عمنا فضلُكم

ونحن الذي عمنا فضلُكم

وهيهات أنا نكافي لكُم

وهيهات أنا نكافي لكُم

And we are those whom your bounty has encompassed.

And we are those whom your grace encompassed

And far be it that we could repay you.

And never can we match You

فما في الغنى واحد مثلُكم

فما في الغنى واحد مثلُكم

وفي الفقر لا عصبة مثلنا

وفي الفقر لا عصبة مثلنا

For in self-sufficiency no one is like you.

So Unique are You in Your Wealth

And in poverty no band is like us.

And in poverty no comrades like us

فنينا بمن لم يزل سرمدا

فنينا بمن لم يزل سرمدا

ومنه به قد سمعنا الندا

ومنه به قد سمعنا الندا

We have been annihilated in the one who has always been eternal.

We perished with You, Everlasting

And from him, through him, we have indeed heard the call.

And from You did we hear the call

ويا من خفيْ عن عيون العدى

ويا من خفيْ عن عيون العدى

رأيناك في كل أمرٍ بدا

رأيناك في كل أمرٍ بدا

And, O you hidden from the eyes of foes,

O You hidden from enemies' eyes

We have seen you in everything that appeared.

We saw You in every manifest thing

وليس من الأمر شيء لنا

وليس من الأمر شيء لنا

طمسنا بأنواركم والسنا

طمسنا بأنواركم والسنا

And nothing of the matter belongs to us.

And nothing of the matter is ours

We have been effaced by your lights and radiance.

We are veiled by Your light and forgotten

وآلَ الورى عندنا للفنا

وآلَ الورى عندنا للفنا

وقد صار لي حبكم ديدنا

وقد صار لي حبكم ديدنا

And creation, for us, has passed into annihilation.

And all mortals are doomed to perish

And love of you has indeed become my constant habit.

Loving You became my way of life

سترت اسمكم غيرةً ها أنا

سترت اسمكم غيرةً ها أنا

أموِّهُ بالشعب والمنحنى

أموِّهُ بالشعب والمنحنى

I have concealed your name out of jealousy; here I am,

I concealed Your name in jealousy, behold

disguising it with the ravine and the bend.

I confuse with prostrations and genuflections

جرت خوف هذا الجفا أدمعي

جرت خوف هذا الجفا أدمعي

وشوقي به التهبت أضلعي

وشوقي به التهبت أضلعي

My tears flowed for fear of this estrangement.

My tears flowed in fear of abandonment

And with my longing my ribs burst into flame.

And my craving made my ribs blaze

وأنت الذي لا سواه أعي

وأنت الذي لا سواه أعي

إذا كنت في كل حال معي

إذا كنت في كل حال معي

And you are the one besides whom I perceive no other.

And You are the One I perceive besides no other

If you are with me in every state,

If You are with me in every state

فعن حمل زادي أنا في غنى

فعن حمل زادي أنا في غنى

على سيرنا لم يزل سيرُكم

على سيرنا لم يزل سيرُكم

Then I have no need to carry my provisions.

Then I have no need to carry provisions

Your journey has always run along ours.

Your way has always been our way

وفي روض قلبي شدا طيرُكم

وفي روض قلبي شدا طيرُكم

وخير جميع الورى خيرُكم

وخير جميع الورى خيرُكم

And in my heart's garden your birds sang.

And in the garden of my heart Your birds nested

And all creation's goodness is your goodness.

And the best of all mortals is Your best

فأنتم هم الحق لا غيرُكم

فأنتم هم الحق لا غيرُكم

For you yourselves are the Truth, none other than you.

For You are the Truth, none other

So, if only I knew: who am I?

Would that I know who am I!
