There is no bewilderment concerning the Real among those endowed with guidance;
There is no bewilderment concerning the Real among those endowed with guidance.
rather, among them, guidance from Him is recognized.
Rather, among them, guidance from Him is known.

They are a people from whose hearts He lifted His veil;
A people from whose heart He has lifted His veil.
through them He is given form—rather, through them He is described.
And with them He is equated; rather, through them He is described.

أين الظلام وشمسه لا تكسف
Within them still shines the light of the darkness of their being.
May the light of their existence’s darkness never cease within them.
Where is darkness, when its sun is never eclipsed?
Where is darkness, when His sun is not eclipsed?

And the Essence—that very Essence—is one, just as
it was from all eternity, in the judgment of the fair-minded.
it was of old, in the judgment of anyone fair-minded.

People became bewildered through reason, because
And people were bewildered by their intellects, because they
they sought to assign Him a mode, though He cannot be given one.
sought to define His mode of being, though He cannot be so defined.

Had they taken refuge in His sanctuary from their thoughts,
Had they taken refuge in His sanctuary from their thoughts,
and let Him—not reason—guide them, they would have been graced with gifts.
and been guided through Him, not through reason, they would surely have been granted gifts.

But when the Abaser desires a rank

for a man, he occupies it—who, then, can alter it?

For He is the One who conditions reason through His commands,
For He is the one who conditions reason through commands,
and in the Presence of the Self-Subsisting, reason is what is conditioned.
and in the presence of the Self-Subsisting One, that reason is conditioned.
