1. كشفت الحجب عن عيني

    ونور الوجه قد أشرق

    The veils were lifted from my eye,

    and the light of the face shone.

  2. وبيني زال من بيني

    ولا ح البرق بالأبرق

    And my separation vanished from my midst,

    and lightning flashed at al-Abraq.

  3. فلا كيفي ولا أيني

    ومن يعلق بنا يغرق

    So neither my 'how' nor my 'where' remains,

    and whoever clings to us drowns.

  4. وحبي قد وفى ديني

    بزاهي ثغره الأفرق

    And my beloved has paid my debt

    with his radiant, gap-toothed smile.

  5. بدا بالجانب الغربي

    جمال الوجه من سلمى

    On the western side appeared

    the beauty of Salma's face.

  6. وزال البعد بالقرب

    وطاب المبسم الألمى

    And distance vanished through nearness,

    and the dusky-lipped smile grew sweet.

  7. ولاح السر في قلبي

    وربي زادني علما

    And the secret shone in my heart,

    and my Lord increased my knowledge.

  8. فيا بدري ويا زيني

    تجافيك الشجي أحرق

    So, O my full moon, O my adornment,

    your aloofness has burned the sorrowful one.

  9. سقاني الكاس من نفسي

    وفيه خمرة الأرواح

    He gave me the cup from my own soul,

    and in it was the wine of souls.

  10. فسكري كان عن حسي

    وعن عقلي وعن ما لاح

    So my intoxication was beyond my senses,

    and beyond my reason, and beyond whatever appeared.

  11. وقد أخرجت من حبسي

    إلى إطلاق ساقي الراح

    And I was brought out of my prison

    into the freedom of the wine-bearer.

  12. وصدقي بان من ميني

    وعُود الحظ قد أورق

    And my truth stood apart from my falsehood,

    and fortune's bough put forth leaves.

  13. لنا الألحان قد رقت

    وراق الجنك والطنبور

    For us, the melodies grew tender,

    and the chang harp and tanbur lute were pleasing.

  14. وأسراري لقد حقت

    وقلبي بالمنى مسرور

    And my secrets have indeed been realized,

    and my heart rejoices in its hopes.

  15. وأستار الحجى انشقت

    وناري بدلت بالنور

    And the veils of reason were rent,

    and my fire was changed into light.

  16. وعن عيني انمحى غيني

    فكيف الصب لا يأرق

    And my haze was wiped from my eye,

    so how could the ardent lover not lie sleepless?

  17. لحاك الله يا لاحي

    إلى كم منك هذا اللوم

    May God curse you, O my reproacher!

    How long will this reproach of yours continue?

  18. فإني المثبت الماحي

    وإني من رجال اليوم

    For I am the affirmer, the effacer,

    and I am among the men of this day.

  19. متى ما ذقت من راحي

    عرفت العذر عند القوم

    Whenever you taste some of my wine,

    you will understand the people's excuse.

  20. تعال ادخل بلا شين

    إلى تيار ذا المغرق

    Come, enter without blemish

    into the current of this drowning-place.

  21. جعلت الشرع معقولَكْ

    وربك مقتضَى الأفكارْ

    You made sacred law your rational conception,

    and your Lord what thoughts entail.

  22. فراجع فيه منقولَكْ

    فقبلكْ عاندت كفارْ

    So review your received teaching concerning Him,

    for unbelievers resisted obstinately before you.

  23. ألم تسلم على قُوْلَكْ

    لربك أنت في إنكارْ

    Have you not submitted, as you claim?

    You are in denial of your Lord.

  24. وما بالهين اللينْ

    مقامي للدما أهرقْ

    And neither easy nor gentle

    is my station: it has shed blood.

  25. صلاة الله مولانا

    على نور الهدى أحمدْ

    May the blessing of God, our Master,

    be upon Ahmad, the light of guidance,

  26. ومن بالحق أولانا

    لنيران العدى أخمد

    and upon him who favored us with truth

    and quenched the fires of the foes.

  27. به عبد الغنيْ الآنا

    ذوي التكذيب قد أكمد

    Through him, Abd al-Ghani now

    has cast the deniers into sorrow.

  28. جلا بالجمع للرين

    عن القلب الذي أفرق

    He cleared the rust through union

    from the heart that had become divided.
