The folk's speech is neither a cipher nor

an allusion from them conveyed through its hints.

And it is explicit and clear to them,

from the script's alif to its yāʾ,

in keeping with their conventions; everyone who

    knows them gains its tidings.

Like syntax and morphology, they have a terminology

which the adept among its sons understand.

    So mingle with the folk, and do not reject them;

you will tell a person's remedy from his ailment.

And keep company with them: you will know them; and do not

transgress; a dead man will triumph through his revival.

will a man see light through his darkness.

And whoever keeps company with a lover will know him

in his concealing the secret and revealing it.

None knows the longings except the one who

has endured them within his inward parts.

And every community has one rightly guided

and one astray, by the decree of His dispensation.

This is made fair to them, and made foul to them

is that; so take each with its parts.
