The Lord is the one most worthy of us,

and we are the other descent.

We saw Him through ourselves when

He manifested on the left-hand side.

And we were His meaning, proceeding from Him,

so we did not accord Him His due worth.

And our meaning came as creation,

and His meaning came as command.

We were hidden within Him when

    He manifested openly among us.

So before Him we were an unveiling,

and to ourselves we were a veil.

We stood short of Him on dry land,

and through Him we have waded into a sea.

And we perceived none but ourselves in

    His overpowering manifestation through us.

And the unseen of the unseen is unveiled,

and our Lord knows it best.

And it is veiled from us by ourselves,

as the reminder has already come.

And this state does not pass,

and this ailment does not heal.

So tell the one who loves:

    Leave the veiled virgin alone.

What are you, then, that you should

hope to knock at the secluded chamber?

    And yet you are enthralled

by her favors, one after another.

    به كل الورى أسرى

    This is manifest beauty;

through it, all creatures are captives.

And the highest of all is one drawn

    toward it, drawing captives,

    without self or attribute,

and without this world or the next.

He is the one who forgets her, the enticer,

and there is neither one who forgets nor one enticed.
