1. طرف الذي طلب التحقيق سهرانُ

    وعقلُه بشراب الله سكرانُ

    The eye of one who sought realization of truth is sleepless;

    And his mind is drunk on God's wine;

  2. وقلبه فيه أخلاق مطهرة

    حيمدة وهو بالتوفيق ملآن

    And in his heart are purified virtues,

    Praiseworthy, and it is filled with divine aid.

  3. إن رمت أخلاقه الحسنى تعددها

    فلتصغ منك لما أبديه آذان

    If you wish to enumerate his finest virtues,

    Then let your ears listen to what I disclose.

  4. هي الوقار كذا التقصير في أمل

    ونيةٌ رحمةٌ أيضاً وإيمان

    They are dignity, and likewise keeping hopes short;

    And intention, mercy as well, and faith;

  5. نصيحةٌ غيرةٌ شكرٌ مجاهدةٌ

    تصوفٌ ثم إخلاصٌ وإحسان

    Good counsel, jealous zeal, gratitude, spiritual striving;

    Sufism, then sincerity and benevolence;

  6. خوف من الله مع حزن له أدب

    وذكر موت وتفويض وإيقان

    Fear of God, with sorrow; he has proper conduct;

    And remembrance of death, entrusting affairs to God, and certainty;

  7. وغبطة في التقى رشدٌ مرابطةٌ

    شجاعة ثم تحقيق وإمعان

    And emulation in piety, right guidance, steadfast vigilance;

    Courage, then realization of truth and deep reflection;

  8. وكظم غيظٍ وعفوٌ والخشوع كذا

    رفق وصدق وما تبديه فتيان

    And restraining anger, forgiveness, and humble reverence likewise;

    Gentleness, truthfulness, and what young men display;

  9. والحب في الله ثم البغض فيه به

    أنس وشوق إلى المولى وأشجان

    And love for God's sake, then hatred for His sake; with Him,

    Intimacy, longing for the Lord, and sorrows;

  10. وحسن ظنٍّ وزهدٌ عفةٌ وحياً

    أمانة ثم تسليم وإذعان

    And good opinion, renunciation, chastity, and modesty;

    Trustworthiness, then surrender and submission;

  11. صلابة الدين ثم الإستقامة مع

    قناعة وعلى الرحمن تكلان

    Firmness in religion, then uprightness with

    Contentment, and reliance upon the Most Merciful;

  12. ورقة والتأني والتملق في

    تحصيل علم لدى شيخ له شان

    And tenderness, deliberation, and flattery in

    Gaining knowledge from a shaykh of standing;

  13. سلامة الصدر من حقدٍ مراقبةٌ

    فراسةٌ ذكرُ أنَّ الله منان

    A breast free from rancor, watchfulness;

    Discernment, remembrance that God is the Bountiful Giver;

  14. والمدح والذم فيه الإستواء كذا

    تفكرٌ حكمةٌ تنمو وتزدان

    And praise and blame are alike to him; likewise,

    Reflection, wisdom that grows and gains in beauty;

  15. مروءة واعتقاد لا ابتداع به

    حبُّ الخمولِ فلا يدريه إنسان

    Nobility of character, and belief without innovation;

    Love of obscurity, so that no person knows him;

  16. صبر وسعي وحلم توبة ورجا

    محبة الله حتى عنه رضوان

    Patience, effort, forbearance, repentance, and hope;

    Love of God, even contentment with Him;

  17. وفاء عهد وإنجاز لموعدة

    عقاب نفس عتاب فيه تبيان

    Keeping a covenant, and fulfilling a promise;

    Punishing the self, reproach that brings clarity;

  18. تواضع ثم إيثار مشارطة

    حساب نفس له في العدل ميزان

    Humility, then preferring others, setting terms for oneself;

    Reckoning with the self, with a balance of justice;

  19. كذا عبودية حرية وكذا

    إرادة والسخا ما فيه نقصان

    Likewise, servanthood, freedom, and likewise,

    Resolve, and generosity in which there is no lack;

  20. وقصد طول حياة للتقى وإلى

    خير مبادرة إذ فيه إمكان

    And seeking a long life for piety, and toward

    Good, hastening whenever it is possible;

  21. فخذ حميدة أخلاق ثمانية

    أتت وسبعين عقد فيه مرجان

    So take these praiseworthy virtues—eight

    And seventy they number—a necklace set with coral.
