أتعبتني بقرُ الشامِ

أتعبتني بقرُ الشامِ

وهي في نقضٍ وإبرامِ

وهي في نقضٍ وإبرامِ

The cattle of al-Sham have wearied me,

while they engage in undoing and binding.

وا عنائي كم أعلمهم

وا عنائي كم أعلمهم

ثم ألقى جهلهم نامي

ثم ألقى جهلهم نامي

Alas for my toil! How often I teach them,

then find their ignorance growing.

زبلُهُم في الماء صيَّرهم

زبلُهُم في الماء صيَّرهم

شربُهُ من غير أفهام

شربُهُ من غير أفهام

Their dung in the water has rendered them—

through drinking it—devoid of understanding.

لم يرقوا بالمواعظ إذ

لم يرقوا بالمواعظ إذ

ماؤهم من حجر هامي

ماؤهم من حجر هامي

They have not grown tender through admonitions, since

their water pours forth from stone.

كلهم لا يعرفون سوى

كلهم لا يعرفون سوى

قبح أفعال وآثام

قبح أفعال وآثام

All of them know nothing but

vile deeds and sins.

بطنهم والفرج أهلكم

بطنهم والفرج أهلكم

مثل ثيران وأنعام

مثل ثيران وأنعام

Their bellies and genitals have destroyed you,

like bulls and livestock.

فتراهم لا عقول لهم

فتراهم لا عقول لهم

إنما هم أسر أوهام

إنما هم أسر أوهام

So you see that they have no reason;

they are merely captives of delusions.

عصبة البهتان ضلوا ولم

عصبة البهتان ضلوا ولم

يختشوا زلات أقدام

يختشوا زلات أقدام

The band of slander went astray and did not

fear their feet slipping.

فيَّ قد زادت وساوسهم

فيَّ قد زادت وساوسهم

وابتُلوا في داء برسام

وابتُلوا في داء برسام

Their obsessions about me have increased,

and they were afflicted with delirious fever.

فلذا هم يخلطون بنا

فلذا هم يخلطون بنا

فرطَ تحقيرٍ بإكرام

فرطَ تحقيرٍ بإكرام

Thus, in dealing with us, they mingle

extreme contempt with honor.

بعضهم للبعض متَّبعٌ

بعضهم للبعض متَّبعٌ

حذوَ أقدام بأقدام

حذوَ أقدام بأقدام

Some of them follow others,

matching footstep with footstep.

حاولوا بالإستهانة أن

حاولوا بالإستهانة أن

يخفضوا مرفوع أعلامي

يخفضوا مرفوع أعلامي

They tried, through scorn, to

lower my high-raised banners.

وأرادوا في تعنُّتهم

وأرادوا في تعنُّتهم

أن يذلوا قدريَ السامي

أن يذلوا قدريَ السامي

And in their obstinacy they sought

to abase my lofty rank,

ويهينوني ويحتقروا

ويهينوني ويحتقروا

علم تحقيقي وإلهامي

علم تحقيقي وإلهامي

and humiliate me and scorn

the knowledge of my realization and inspiration.

ولقد خاضوا ولم يَخَفوا

ولقد خاضوا ولم يَخَفوا

غرقاً في بحريَ الطامي

غرقاً في بحريَ الطامي

Indeed, they plunged in without fearing

drowning in my surging sea.

والإله الحق مطَّلعٌ

والإله الحق مطَّلعٌ

بأموري خير علام

بأموري خير علام

And the true God is aware

of my affairs, the best of knowers,

قادرٌ في الحال يأخذهم

قادرٌ في الحال يأخذهم

بي على قهر وإرغام

بي على قهر وإرغام

able to seize them at once

on my account, with force and compulsion.

ما أنا من جنسهم وبنو

ما أنا من جنسهم وبنو

آدم هم مثل أصنام

آدم هم مثل أصنام

I am not of their kind, and the sons of

Adam are like idols.

فكأني بينهم وأنا ال

فكأني بينهم وأنا ال

عربيْ من نسل أعجام

عربيْ من نسل أعجام

So among them I seem, though I am an

Arab, to be of non-Arab descent.

ينكروني كلما جهلوا

ينكروني كلما جهلوا

فيزيد الله إنعامي

فيزيد الله إنعامي

They reject me whenever they act in ignorance,

so God increases His bounty to me.

وأنا من خبث عصبتهم

وأنا من خبث عصبتهم

بين عذال ولوام

بين عذال ولوام

And because of the malice of their band, I am

among reproachers and faultfinders.

مولدي فيهم ولا عجب

مولدي فيهم ولا عجب

جوهر في صدف كامي

جوهر في صدف كامي

I was born among them, and no wonder:

a jewel lies hidden in a shell.

لست منهم لانفراديَ في ال

لست منهم لانفراديَ في ال

بيت عنهم منذ أعوام

بيت عنهم منذ أعوام

I am not one of them, having secluded myself in the

house, away from them, for years.

قسوة فيهم وفرط جفا

قسوة فيهم وفرط جفا

لم يخف مرميهم رامي

لم يخف مرميهم رامي

There is hard-heartedness in them, and excessive harshness;

their target has feared no archer.

وابتُلوا بالبغي من حسد

وابتُلوا بالبغي من حسد

مثل أمراض وأسقام

مثل أمراض وأسقام

And they were afflicted with aggression born of envy,

like diseases and ailments.

قد أتى في مسند ابن عديْ

قد أتى في مسند ابن عديْ

خبرٌ عن جُلِّ أقوام

خبرٌ عن جُلِّ أقوام

There has come, in Ibn ʿAdi's Musnad,

a report concerning most people:

قال خير الخلق سيدُنا

قال خير الخلق سيدُنا

الجفا والبغيُ في الشام

الجفا والبغيُ في الشام

The best of creation, our master, said:

"Harshness and aggression are in al-Sham."
