حدثوا عني حديث الغرامْ
ياO كرامْnoble ones واشرحواand describe وجديmy yearning
يا كرامْ واشرحوا وجدي
Tell the tale of my passionate love,
They spoke of me, the talk of love
O noble ones, and describe my yearning.
O nobles, explain my passion
إننيindeed I am مضنىًworn out كثيرabundant in الهيامْlove's delirium
إنني مضنىً كثير الهيامْ
لاnot أنامْI sleep ساهرwakeful وحديalone
لا أنامْ ساهر وحدي
Indeed, I am worn out, full of love's delirium;
I am lovesick, oft in daydreams lost
I do not sleep; I keep vigil alone.
Awake through the night, alone I toss
ملتI leaned سكراًin drunkenness نحوtoward ساقيthe cupbearer المدامْof wine

Drunk, I leaned toward the cupbearer of wine,
Drunk with desire for the cupbearer’s pour
When he rose, fastening the banner.
When he stood, his face obscured

His face shows through the veil;
Behind his veil, would that I might see
With a kiss—if only it would avail!
His visage, if it could comfort me

These are the workings of the Unseen of all unseen things;
These are the acts of the Unseen’s realm
I do not repent of my passion for my beloved.
I repent not, though in love I whelm

Look on him with your heart’s own eyes
So that the hardened mind may melt.
To melt this frozen heart that lies

Behold him shone at dusk’s first gleam
With the inevitable delight of nearness.

Indeed, this beauty is the light of darkness;
This beauty is light within the dark
One whose loss is great has fallen madly in love with it.
For him I pine, parted from his mark
