Take your knowledge of God—do not delay—

and of the cosmos from “Be,” not from reason; see clearly.

For “Be” is His true utterance, which is a word

of being, from which created things appear,

as light appears through openings measured out

for you in a wall, while the light is not delimited.

    Yet He appears through them, and they are His work;

He has not dwelt within them, yet He acts within them.

    هو الله للأمثال يضرب فانظروا

    Do not suppose that I devised this parable myself;

it is God who sets forth parables; look closely.

And we are those who know them, as

He told us in the Qur’an; He is the Fashioner.

    وما الغير إلا حائر متنكر

    He fashions parables, and through Him we understand them;

others are merely bewildered and in denial.

His parables are created, like a gnat

and whatever is above it; the reflective person understands them.

God’s Book is binding upon you—that is, cleave to it, so that

your beliefs may be confined within it.

And He said “God’s Book,” placing it before

“upon you” to exclude all else; reflect.

And “Be!”—then the thing comes to be, existing in relation

to Him, without independence of its own, when it is commanded.

Take heed: understand our God’s speech in this way,

for God’s speech is folded up and unfolded.

Likewise, every deed our Lord commands

us to do, He creates and governs within us.

So we perform it outwardly, while He is the doer

of it inwardly; a likeness of existence is posited.

It is the thing my Lord willed, and it is perishing,

as He said, “except His Face”; see clearly.

    فليس من الحق الأباطل تصدر

    Do not suppose that things were begotten from Him;

for unrealities do not issue from the Real.

Nor does one existence arise from another. Say:

“He is God,” and recite what is established.

For your Lord was not begotten, nor did He beget; listen

to His words in the Reminder whenever you remember.

And be as you already were in His knowledge, without

existence; God’s existence is not repeated.

But when He appeared in self-disclosure,

you thought that pure existence had become yours.

Yet you, through Him, are His determination out of nonexistence,

hidden and manifest beneath the Names’ onslaught.

And He has told us: He creates in stages,

ordered, stage after stage, as one is transformed.

So you live through Him for a time, and at another

we die through Him; God does not change.

Remain helpless before Him; believe in Him, and do not

liken Him to the conception on which you reflect.

Always declare Him beyond what your senses perceive

and what the universal intellect conceives; for God is greater.
