1. للذنب سر عجيبُ

    وفيه خبثٌ وطيبُ

    Sin has a wondrous secret.

    And within it are foulness and goodness.

  2. وفي أناس نعيم

    وفي أناس لهيب

    And in some people, bliss;

    And in some people, flame.

  3. فاحذره واقبل عليه

    فهو الجمال المهيب

    So beware of it, and turn toward it:

    For it is awe-inspiring beauty.

  4. لولاه ما كان قرب

    ولا تلاقى الحبيب

    Without it, there would be no nearness,

    Nor would the beloved be met.

  5. ولا النبيون كانوا

    ولا المقام القريب

    Nor would the prophets have existed,

    Nor the station of nearness.

  6. فهو الحجاب لخلق

    فمخطئٌ ومصيب

    For it is the veil for creatures:

    So one errs, and another is right.

  7. لأنه السور فيه

    للفرقتين نصيب

    For it is the wall; within it

    Both groups have a share.

  8. فرحمة باطناً إذ

    في الظاهر التعذيب

    So there is mercy within, while

    On the outside is torment.

  9. والكون ما تم إلا

    به ففاز اللبيب

    And the universe became complete only

    Through it; so the wise one triumphed.

  10. إياك إياك فافهم

    فالشمس ليلاً تغيب

    Beware, beware—so understand!

    For the sun disappears at night.

  11. ومن يناديك يوما

    فإنه سيجيب

    And whoever calls you one day,

    He will indeed answer.
