She subsists of herself for her own.

She is not in her cup, nor is the cup in her.

A wine that carries minds away and annihilates

everything for everyone who beholds her.

Bring her, O drinking companion, and leave all else.

For she is the one who annihilates all else.

Do not ignorantly say that she is the cosmos.

The cosmos only arises from a command that follows her.

Her command is 'Be!'—and it came to be among what is other than her.

And affirming anything other than her negates her.

Nothing is with her, and with everything

she is; so understand, if you are noble-minded and discerning.

She guides through herself, to herself, whomever she wills,

thus dispelling the attribution of modality and likeness.

And she leads astray whomever she wills; so submit to

her decree concerning you, and uphold her transcendence.

And follow the sacred law submissively, and seek access

through devotions to her that she approves.

The manifest Truth shows you nothing other than her.

    Set aside disputation and deception.

Stand firm through her, always relying upon her, and strive,

sincere in your steadfastness; you will draw near to her.

Then you see her through her, while you are not with her.

You are only like a veil over her.

Yet she is not veiled; so attain realization

through self-annihilation in abiding, while you are in her presence.

I have offered you my counsel, if you are among those

whom she has enabled to accept counsel concerning her.

Do not suppose affirmation of divine unity by reason accept-

able; beware lest you become foolish thereby.

Yes, reason was a foundation for the sacred law,

while the sacred law concerning her became self-evident.

Then the sacred law, through its ruling, dispensed with reason,

for affirming divine unity by reason is bewilderment.

    قد خفي عنك فاطلب التنبيها

    And it is associating partners with God, if you reflect upon it;

it has been hidden from you, so seek awakening.

Indeed, every mind's affirmation of unity, if it is not

grounded in the sacred law, is not valid.

Like Iblis, who affirmed God's unity by reason,

forsaking his Lord's command and distorting it.

His affirmation of the Deity's unity is not accept-

able, even if he were a scholar and jurist in it.

For he strayed from his Lord's command in transgression,

and avidly craved what He had forbidden him.

So he is a heretic under every sacred law; beware of

a trait in him that he has never ceased to follow:

saying, 'Indeed, before anyone but You I will not pros-

trate'—impugning the command, in self-conceit and arrogance.

as the heretics have said, 'The sacred la-

w is for the heedless'—a deception.

They claim divine unity—the unity of Ibli-

s—regarding the rulings as something loathsome.

So upon them for all time, and upon him,

be God's curse; if it slackens, it is told, 'More!'
